2 Poetry Poetry is literature that uses a few words to tell about ideas, feelings and paints a picture in the readers mind. Poems may or may not rhyme. They are meant to be read aloud.

3 Poetry Form Form- the way it looks on the page. LINE - a group of words together on one line of the poem. STANZA - a group of lines arranged together The Night Before Christmas ‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; Stanza

5 Rhyme Sounds that are alike at the end of words, such as mouse and house. Near rhyming words- the words do not exactly rhyme. As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle sky;.

10 Imagery Helps you paint a picture or imagine what is happening or what the poet is feeling. Example: The children were nestled all snug in their bed……

11 Simile A comparison of two things using the words like or as. Example: His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

12 Metaphor A comparison of two things WITHOUT using “as or like” Example: The clouds are fluffy pillows.
