6 Accreditation is a desirable award that symbolizes professionalism, excellence, and competence. The Department is recognized as one that performs its duties and responsibilities in accordance with professional standards of good law enforcement practices and management. What is the Significance?

7 How Are We Accredited? National Accreditation: The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) State Accreditation: Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Agencies Accreditation (CFA) Accrediting Commissions

8 Established in 1979 by the four major law enforcement member associations: – International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) – National Organization of Black L.E. Executives (NOBLE) – National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) – Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) The Commission has 21 members, 11 members are law enforcement practitioners; the remaining 10 members are selected from the public and private sectors. The position of Commissioner is voluntary and receives no salary, although travel and per diem expenses are provided. CALEA

9 In 1993, Florida Statute 943.125 directed that the Florida Sheriffs Association and the Florida Police Chiefs Association create a voluntary law enforcement accreditation program. The Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation, Inc. is comprised of four sheriffs, four chiefs, and one representative each from the Association of Counties, the League of Cities, and the Judiciary (12 Commissioners). CFA
