Using MAP Data: It’s All About Differentiating February 5, 2008 4:00-6:00 pm Highland Ranch

Today’s Goals Share Differentiation Strategies using MAP Define Differentiated Instruction Process “Mapping a Route Toward Differentiated Instruction” together Explore some REAL Models for Differentiating Instruction (Thanks to Amy and Anthony) Practice developing differentiated instruction for one concept or unit with a grade level team. (Math using the AIMS site?)

Definition of Differentiation “Differentiation is classroom practice that looks eyeball to eyeball with the reality that kids differ, and the most effective teachers do whatever it takes to hook the whole range of kids on learning.” ~ Carol Ann Tomlinson

Respectful Tasks Choose Respectful Tasks  Not just extra drill and kill for low performing students  Not just more problems to solve or longer assignments to keep high performing students busy  Tasks for all learners are authentic, interesting, and appropriately challenging

Flexible Grouping  Students move frequently between groups as they gain proficiency  Students also work in groups defined by interests and/or learning styles  Teachers sometimes move between groups to provide instruction

Ongoing Assessments Use Ongoing Assessment and Adjustments  Assessment is formative and not just summative  Quick, not always recorded for a grade  Directly impacts ongoing plans for instruction

You can Differentiate the: Content  How do we adjust or modify the knowledge and skills we expect students to learn? Process  How can we adjust the strategies to help students acquire the skills they need? Product  How do we adjust or modify the way we assess student learning? According to student’s Readiness Interests Learning Profiles
