23 Oil Boom and Bust Oil and natural gas has always been part of Oklahoma’s economy. It has gone through boom times (good prices, good demand, lots of jobs) and always followed with busts (low prices, low demand, high unemployment). This has cause our state economy to go through the same cycles many times. It has hurt many “boom” towns because many people left. Today, Oklahoma is much more diversified.
