IBUPROFEN Properties & Biological Effects By Ononiwu Ikenna George

STRUCTURE IUPAC Name: (RS)-2-(4-(2-methylpropyl)phenyl)propanoic acid

Aim: To study the biological, negative and positive effects of Ibuprofen. Formula: Molar Mass: 206.29 g/mol Melting Point: 76 °C (169 °F) Market Names: Advil, Brufen, Motrin, Nurofen, etc. Solubility in Water: Practically Insoluble

INTRODUCTION Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). NSAIDs are drugs that provide analgesic and antipyretic (fever- reducing) effects, and in higher doses, anti-inflammatory effects. Ibuprofen works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body. Ibuprofen is used to reduce fever and treat pain or inflammation caused by many conditions such as headache, toothache, back pain, arthritis, menstrual cramps (in females), or minor injury.

Why The Confusion About Addiction Potential? Some people may take medications which contain addictive medicines IN COMBINATION with ibuprofen. And they want to measure the addiction liability of each. Generic and brand name pain pills that combine ibuprofen with either hydrocodone or oxycodone have fairly high addiction liability. Drugs that contain hydrocodone or oxycodone should be used for short term relief of pain, and are often not prescribed for longer than 7 days for the treatment of acute pain. This is because hydrocodone and oxycodone are some of the most abused and addictive medications in many advanced countries today. How addictive is hydrocodone or oxycodone? Very, especially if used to feel high.

What health conditions might Ibuprofen be applicable?  Dental Pain  Fever  Headache  Migraine  Mild Pain  Myalgia etc.

Serious Side Effects of Ibuprofen  Chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance.  Black, bloody, or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee.  Swelling or rapid weight gain.  severe headache, neck stiffness, chills, increased sensitivity to light, and/or seizure (convulsions).  fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash etc.

Less Serious Side Effects  Upset stomach, mild heartburn, diarrhea, constipation  Dizziness, headache, nervousness  Skin itching or rash  Blurred vision  Ringing in the ears etc.

What substances should be avoided while taking Ibuprofen? Do not take in ibuprofen if you are taking aspirin in order to prevent stroke or heart attack. Ibuprofen can make aspirin less effective in protecting your heart and blood vessels. If you must use both medications, take the ibuprofen at least 8 hours before or 30 minutes after you take the aspirin. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before using any other cold, allergy, or pain medicine. Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs are contained in many combination medicines. Avoid drinking alcohol. It may increase your risk of stomach bleeding.
