1 SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology

2 Course Objective This course is intended for second year B.Tech students, who wish to improve skills through hands-on experience in System Administration. This course will be followed by another course on Network Administration. Students who successfully complete these courses, will be offered part-time work for System and Network Admin in the institute and will be expected to work for at least two semesters. They will also be given credits for the work.

3 Course Objective The course will cover: Computer Hardware & Software, Operating System Administration, High Performance Computing, Virtualization, Cloud Computing, Storage, Backup, Data Centre etc. Develop a conceptual understanding of System Internals, System Administration and Computing Environment. Enable the students to diagnose and troubleshoot Computer Hardware and Software problems and manage various Application Servers.

4 Course Outline Credits: 2 Credits Contact Hours: 1.5 hours per week (Total expected work: Appx 5 hrs per week) Mode of Teaching: Classroom Discussions, Practical Assignments, Industry Visits, Seminars by Industry Speakers and one Project. For most topics, students will be expected to go through prerecorded lecture slides which will be further discussed in the class. The Assignments will be take home to be completed and submitted in the next lecture class. 5 Topics Course Content 1.System Hardware- PC and Server Hardware Architecture –Hardware Architecture –CPU; Memory; Disk Storage –Input/Output units (Keyboard, Mouse, Monitor; CD/DVD Drives, Speaker/Microphone etc) –Motherboard; Power Supply; Network Interface –Rack vs Blade Servers –Cooling Requirements –Performance 2. OS Administration –Features of a widely used operating environment such as MS WINDOWS, UNIX or LINUX –Comparison of operating environments; Various File Systems –Linux system administration –File System and Disk Management –OS Performance and Tuning –Monitoring systems –Administration of specialized servers (Apache, MySQL etc.) –Troubleshooting

6 Topics Course Content 3. Centralized Authentication –Active Directories –LDAP –Radius 4. Storage –DAS (Direct Attached Storage) –NAS (Network Attached Storage) –SAN (Storage Area Network) –NFS and SAMBA –Backup and Recovery

Special Topics –Application Server Management –High Performance Computing –Virtualization –Cloud Computing –Big Data Storage

8 Quizzes Course Content There will be ten quizzes. The quizzes will be at the start of every class and will cover the recorded lecture content which the student is expected to go through on their own.

9 Assignment Course Content There will be ten take home assignments All the assignments have been designed to give you hands on experience on the topics being covered in the lectures. You are expected to use your personal laptop to do the assignments References which will be helpful in the assignments will be provided in the course website.

10 Project Course Content There will be one project, to be done individually or in groups of two. Each project would require 10 - 15 man days of work and will give the students an educative hands-on experience in implementing real life systems. All the projects will be mentored by the course instructor. Some suggested topics have been given in the course website. However any other topic related to systems can be chosen.

11 Grading Guidelines Grading Quizzes: 10% (1% each) Two Exam: 30% (15% each) Assignment: 30% (3% each) Project: 30%
