2. -Unclassified- Defining Trends On 18 August terrorists from Gaza launched a sophisticated, multipronged attack targeting Israeli citizens near the city of Eilat. In the late morning, terrorists wearing Egyptian Central Security Police (CSP) uniforms crossed into Israel through the Sinai Peninsula into Israeli territory, deploying at several locations. The terrorists directed light arms fire at two public buses, the second of which was empty except for the bus driver, and directed light arms fire and explosives at two civilian vehicles en route to the city of Eilat. In the second bus, a terrorist launched a suicide attack and detonated explosives. Overall six Israeli civilians and two IDF soldiers were killed, nine IDF soldiers were injured and at least 30 Israeli civilians were injured. On its way to the scene, light arms fire was directed at an IDF mobilized patrol. Four IDF soldiers were injured and one IDF soldier was killed by friendly fire. In response, An Israel Police SWAT team engaged a group of armed terrorists northwest of the city of Eilat, killing three terrorists. Later in the day, an anti-tank missile was fired at an IAF combat helicopter northwest of the city of Eilat and later that evening, sniper fire was directed at an Israeli police SWAT team during an initiated activity along the Israeli- Egyptian border northwest of the city of Eilat, killing one Israel Police SWAT officer. In response, the IAF initiated a pinpoint attack targeting the house of senior ‘PRC’ activists responsible for carrying out the attack in the city of Rafah. Four to six Palestinians, including the head of the organization in the Gaza Strip, Kamal Nirab, were killed. The attacks were followed by a barrage of rocket and mortar fire emanating from the Gaza Strip targeting Israeli population centers. 3. -Unclassified- Defining Trends On 29 August, a Palestinian terrorist hijacked a taxi cab with a knife in the city of Tel Aviv, lightly injuring the cab driver. He drove the cab a few blocks away, to a nightclub where a large youth event was underway. At approximately 1:40 AM, the terrorist rammed the stolen vehicle through a security blockade that had been erected around the entrance of the club, hitting two BGP officers stationed at the club to provide security for the event and injuring them moderately. He then exited the taxi screaming "Allah Ahkbar" and stabbed randomly at the crowd with a knife. In addition to the BGP officers that were hit by the vehicle, two BGP officers and three Israeli civilians were wounded in the attack – one of the BGP officers severely. BGP forces arrested the terrorist at the scene. The terrorist, 21-year-old Mohamed Sa'afan Ben Mohamed, is a resident of Nablus in Judea and Samaria. Nablus and its surroundings are under the full control of the P.A., and Mohamed entered Israel via territory that is under the jurisdiction of P.A. security forces. He was lightly injured in the process of the attack and was sent to a local hospital for medical care. Current reports indicate that the terrorist acted alone; further details regarding the attack are under joint investigation by the ISA and the Israel Police's Tel Aviv District. 4. -Unclassified- Defining Trends The West Bank Palestinian riots, most of which were violent, continued during the time of this report on a daily basis; 59 major cases were noted, including 3 instances in which rioters threw Molotov cocktails. Moreover, on 32 occasions Palestinians threw stones at Israeli civilian vehicles, including 4 public buses. Arms were confiscated by IDF forces on multiple occasions, including a handgun, air rifles, M16 magazines, and 6 kg of explosive materials hidden within a fire extinguisher. Terrorist attacks continue in the West Bank. During the period 16 August – 31 August, there was one attempted attack in which Palestinians placed an IED at the technical fence and multiple incidents in which Molotov cocktails were used against Israeli civilians and security forces. Palestinian Security Force operations in the West Bank continue but their scope and quality must be increased. When necessary, the IDF takes actions to prevent terrorist attacks from being carried out.

5. -Unclassified- The Gaza Strip Defining Trends Government Policy on allowing goods into the Gaza Strip continues; crossings are now able to absorb over 300 trucks a day. However, Hamas continues to act aggressively towards Israel and terrorism from the Gaza Strip still presents a real and immediate threat to the lives and livelihoods of the citizens of southern Israel. In addition to Hamas’ own terrorist activities, Hamas allows various terrorist groups to use the territory under its control to plan and carry out attacks and rocket launches. This includes the major attacks near the city of Eilat that occurred on 18 August, in which eight Israelis were killed and thirty-one were injured. The 18 August attacks were followed by a major escalation of rocket and mortar fire. From 18 – 25 August over 200 rockets and mortars, including 34 Grad rockets, hit Israeli territory. Over the period of this report a total of 136 rockets, 53 mortars, and 34 Grad rockets landed in Israeli territory. The IAF acted in response to the rocket and mortar fire with pinpoint attacks targeting terrorist strongholds such as Hamas military outposts, rocket launching squads, weapons caches and tunnels intended for terrorism.
