3 Visit to the World War1 Battlefields – June 2009 ITINERARY Thursday - Depart Blackburn and travel by coach to Dover with a refreshment stop en route. At Dover we board the cross channel ferry for the short 90 minute crossing to Calais. Landing in France we have a short journey into Belgium to the town of Ypres. Check in at the Holiday Inn Hotel for 2 nights dinner bed and breakfast. After dinner we propose to walk around the corner to the Menin Gate for the Ceremony of the Last Post. This takes place every night at 8pm. The bars and cafes of Ypres are just on the doorstep of the Hotel. Thursday - Depart Blackburn and travel by coach to Dover with a refreshment stop en route. After lunchtime we will board the coach for a short journey around the Ypres Battlefield Sites. We will visit the main sites: first stop will be at Essex Farm, here John McCrae wrote In Flanders Fields the poppies blow between the crosses row on row…. We can see a dressing station and also the 49 th West Riding memorial. A short drive and we arrive at Langemarck- the German Cemetery where blockhouses can be seen. Then onto Tyne Cot the largest British war cemetery in the world - here there is an interpretative centre to visit. Onto Passchendaele and the area of Hill 60 and 62 before returning to the Hotel for dinner. After checking in there is free time to look around the shops Cathedral or visit the underground WW1 museum. There is a huge market square and several pavement cafes and bars. Visiting Lochnagar Crater dating from 1915 a hole measuring 300 ft across and 90 ft deep! Then on to Thiepval visitor centre and memorial to the British dead. Then past the Ulster memorial to the small village of Serre - here a highlight of the tour- we walk 15 minutes along a farm track to the Accrington Pals Memorial and see in this wooded copse and many Lancashire and Yorkshire graves. We return to Arras for dinner and the night. Sunday - After breakfast a day visiting the Battlefields of the Somme. We travel to Peronne Blackburn’s twin town. This hotel is located in the city centre. opposite the high speed train, TGV, railway station and 5 minutes walk from the historic centre. It is also 20 minutes from the most important World War 1 memorial cemetery.There are 80 bedrooms all equipped with bathrooms. These are comfortable with a standard modern décor.

13 Accrington Pals " The History of the East Lancashire Regiment in the Great War" records that out of some 720 Accrington Pals who took part in the attack, 584 were killed, wounded or missing.
