Maryland FIRST / STEM Action Season Kickoff October 3, 2013 Rev B

Topics Robot Game Table Setup Review Missions Cover Rules Best (Good) Practices Official rules and updates supersede everything in my presentation (I might have made mistakes) 2 Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Match Basics Robot game is played by an autonomous robot o Touching robot outside base = touch penalty o Touch penalty exception this season for Obstacle Mission (only) Each match is 2 ½ minutes long At least 1 minute before each round for robot setup Two game fields are joined back to back 3 Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Match Basics Two team members at the table Remaining team members stand nearby Team members tag in/out Objects may be stored off the table (stand, box) o Stored objects must remain visible to the referee o Be sure to leave all models at end of round 4 Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Scoring Each team gets 3 rounds Highest score of the 3 rounds counts Teams given time to practice before matches begin Referees will score the round based on field condition at the end of the round 5 Referees review score sheet with teams before the scores become final Scores are calculated by scoring software Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Field Setup 6 Mat touching South wall. Centered between East and West walls. 5 models begin in Base E x p e c t g a p s ! Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Scoring Regions 7 Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Mission: Vehicles Supply Truck (20 pts) o Goal: Supply Truck is touching the mat in the yellow region at end of match Ambulance (25 pts) o Goal: Ambulance is in the yellow region at end of the match o All of Ambulance’s wheels are touching the mat 8 Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Mission: Construction Construction Relocation (20 pts) o Goal: No gray building units within light green region at end of match Code Construction (5 pts per segment) o Goal: Multi-story gray building within the pink region at end of match o No strategic objects allowed, segment alignment not a factor 9 Both are 3 Segments High Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Mission: Runway & Cargo Plane Runway (30 pts) o Goal: At end of match, only wave water and/or cargo plane anywhere on runway o Objects in yellow region for scoring purposes are exempted Cargo Plane (20 or 30 pts) o Goal: Cargo Plane in yellow (but not light blue) or within light blue region o Update 13 accounts for problems with the Cargo Plane model 10 Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Mission: Base Isolation Base Isolation (30 pts) o Goal: West building undamaged, East building obviously damaged at end of match o Nothing may touch either building except the frame on which they ride o Damage to East building caused solely by movement of frame 11 No Score Score Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Mission: Evacuation Sign Evacuation Sign (30 pts) o Goal: Sign is up and not held in place by a strategic object (team-supplied objects which serve a mission-related purpose, but never qualify as part of the robot) at end of match o No strategic objects nor any mission models may be used to hold the sign 12 Score No Score Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Mission: Tree Branch Tree Branch (30 pts) o Goal: East tree branch below electric lines at end of match o Electric lines must be upright and touching the mat in their original location o Slight nudge to electric lines is OK 13 Score No Score Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Mission: Tsunami Tsunami (20 pts) o Goal: All three waves touching mat at end of match 14 No Score Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Mission: Obstacles Obstacles (10, 16, 23, 31 pts) o Goal: Robot approaches obstacles from the west and completely enters a region o Robot may be rescued by hand without incurring a touch penalty o Mission may be attempted multiple times, highest score is recorded o Robot may not touch mat north of obstacles’ northern line o Obstacles are fragile and designed to break 15 Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Mission: House Lift House Lift (25 pts) o Goal: House is locked in its high position at end of match 16 Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Mission: Progress Progress (2 pts/color reached) o Goal: Number of colors/markers advanced at end of match will be counted o Dial can only be advanced as a result of pushing red lever o Both teams advance dial in same direction and both teams receive the points 17 Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Mission: Family & Water Family (33 pts one person, 66 pts two people) o Goal: Two or more people in any colored region at end of match Water (15 pts each) o Water and person in same colored region at end of match 18 Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Mission: Pets & Safety Pets (15 pts each) o Goal: At least one person together with pet in colored region at end of match Safety (12 pts yellow, 18 pts red) o At least one person in yellow or red region at end of match 19 Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Mission: Supplies & Equipment Supplies & Equipment (3 or 4 pts each) o Goal: At least one non-water item with a person in red or yellow region at end of match o 12 items: two-way radio, battery, generator, 2 fuels, grain, bread, medicine, boom box, flashlight, dirt bike, helmet 20 Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Mission: Safe Place Safe Place (25 pts) o Goal: Robot is in the red region at end of match o If the only part of the robot in the red zone is a part intended solely to extend to the red zone, the mission is not satisfied 21 Score No Score Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Penalties Penalties o For each penalty, the referee places roof debris (one per penalty) on the west-most empty roof mark o After the 4 th penalty, the west-most roof debris is placed as far into the north east corner (light blue region) as possible o -10 pts each outside of light blue o -13 pts each in light blue 22 Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Types of Penalties Touch (Rule 31) o Touching the robot outside of base (exception made for obstacle mission) o Cargo on robot may be forfeited Cargo brought from base the last time the robot left base is returned to base Cargo picked up from field is forfeited o One red roof debris added Sprawl (Rule 32) o If the robot is obviously twice the width of base at the end of the match, regardless of the robot’s location o One red roof debris added Junk (Rule 12) o Strategic objects (objects brought to the field by the team) left on the field o -5 pts if junk is smaller/lighter than robot o -13 pts if junk is larger/heavier than robot 23 Maryland FIRST STEM Action

Robot Game Potpourri Review proper setup for each mission o Be sure you’re practicing with the correct setup When even the smallest part of the robot crosses into base, it’s in base and can be touched o Cargo follows the same rule – if the cargo is on the back of the robot and only the front of the robot has crossed into base, the cargo is still out of base and can’t be touched Qualifiers/Tournaments provide field kits o Do not bring your own (you’ll be asked to put your kit away) During a match, coaches become cheerleaders o Be encouraging, not instructing o Coaches never touch the field (even before/between rounds) Max robot height changed o 16” 12” 24 Maryland FIRST STEM Action
