8 DAY 1 PowerPoint : Introduce NATO, why it was created, who was involved, its place in the Cold War.

9 DAY 1 Map : Cold War Europe – Students will locate “iron curtain” and original NATO members. Discuss ways NATO could act as deterrent to Soviet expansion. Locate “Warsaw Pact” nations

10 DAY 1 Group Activity : Students assigned parts of the North Atlantic Treaty, 1949 and, in 2-3 sentences, paraphrase the preamble and articles – then discuss.

11 DAY 2 Opening : Map Quiz – Students identify “iron curtain” and NATO countries.

12 DAY 2 PowerPoint : Discuss – What NATO has done post-Cold War, success/failure in Yugo (B-H) as peacekeeper, player in War on Terror (Afghan, Iraq).

13 DAY 2 Map : Students evaluate new members, how the end of the Cold War changes the “game” for NATO, and look at world map to identify “hot spots” of current or possible NATO involvement.

14 DAY 2 Discussion / Cartoon Evaluation : For closure, use political cartoons about NATO’s recent actions to engage class in discussion.
