4 Tragic Hero Background
“A man cannot become a hero until he can see the root of his own downfall.” Aristotle The tragic hero is a man of noble stature. He is not an ordinary man, but a man with outstanding quality and greatness about him. His own destruction is for a greater cause or principle.

5 Characteristics of a Tragic Hero
Born of Noble Birth: Royalty, admired, has outstanding qualities

6 Characteristics of a Tragic Hero
Reversal of Fortune: At some point, the hero loses EVERYTHING and has to start over.

7 Characteristics of a Tragic Hero
Moment of Recognition: The hero realizes that he made mistakes and what went wrong. Before his doom, he blames no one but himself.

8 Characteristics of a Tragic Hero
Has a fatal flaw (called Hamartia) Leads to hero’s DOWNFALL... Examples: pride, ambition, impulsive, irrational, and so on

9 Characteristics of a Tragic Hero
Audiences feel bad and pity the hero, because it is too much punishment. (called catharsis)

10 Characteristics of a Tragic Hero
Free Choice: While fate or luck might be a factor in the hero’s downfall, the hero also meets his downfall because of the bad choices he has made.

They usually end up dead!

12 Batman NOBLE BIRTH: Born Bruce Wayne, inherits Wayne Enterprises, owns mansion and is rich

13 Batman’s Reversal of Fortune: Batman takes the fall for a good cop’s death and has the police chase him. He is not Batman for 8 years!

25 Tragic hero Day 2: DO NOW Complete the tragic hero graphic organizer using Romeo from Romeo and Juliet, showing how Romeo fits the six characteristics of a tragic hero, use Google as needed. (You may use Troy Maxson from Fences or Spiderman, if you never read Romeo and Juliet!)

27 Okonkwo Noble Birth NOT AT ALL... He worked to become famous in the clan. He is the greatest wrestler and is respected at the beginning of the book.

Accidentally shoots a boy in chapter 13. Is banished from Umofia for 7 years. Has to start ALL over.

29 Moment of Recognition NOT REALLY... He mostly blames his Chi and other people (Ogonwanne in chapter 25) for all the bad things that happen to him. BUT when he kills the court messenger in chapter 24, he does realize that his clan will never go to war.

30 Okonkwo FATAL FLAW TOO MUCH PRIDE!
(You may choose any details you want from the book to justify this, there is a lot...)

31 Okonkwo Punishment is too much
He is banished for 7 years for ACCIDENTALLY killing a boy. Remember, when I asked you if you felt he should be punished?!

32 Okonkwo: Free Choice or Fate?
FREE CHOICE: Okonkwo chooses to kill Ikemefuna and the court messenger. He chooses to be the way he is (angry, mean, and so on). FATE: His gun accidentally goes off, banishing him for 7 years. The missionaries coming are out of his control too!

33 Okonkwo’s Downfall MOST tragic hero’s die in the end, and Okonkwo hanging himself fits that!
