Chemistry: An Introduction

What are these?

Why Study Chemistry? Everything you can touch or taste or smell is a chemical When you study chemistry, you come to understand a bit about how things work. An explanation for everyday things, like why laundry detergent works better in hot water or how baking soda works or why not all pain relievers work equally well on a headache.

What Fields of Study Use Chemistry? You could use chemistry in most fields, but it's commonly seen in the sciences and in medicine. Chemists, physicists, biologists, and engineers study chemistry. Science teachers study chemistry. Fire fighters and people who make fireworks learn about chemistry. So do truck drivers, plumbers, artists, hairdressers, chefs... the list is extensive.

1.3 Solving Problems Using a Scientific Approach It’s 8:30 A.M on Friday. Which is the best way to drive to school to avoid traffic congestion? You have two tests on Monday. Should you divide your study time quality or allot more time to one than to the other?

1.3 Solving Problems Using a Scientific Approach 1. Making an observation:  Recognize the problem and state it clearly  Quantitative or Qualitative 2. Formulating a hypothesis:  Propose possible solutions and possible explanation 3. Performing an experiment  Decide which of the solutions is the best or decide whether the explanation proposed is reasonable.

1.4 Scientific Method Theory (model): is a set of tested hypotheses that gives an overall explanation of some part of nature. Explain why it happens Can be changed as more information are become more available Law: a summary of observed behavior

Various Parts of the Scientific Method

Learning Chemistry Learn another language Trials and errors Recognize mistakes and learn from mistakes
