3 “Peeling Paint” BOCA 1984 Section ES – 302.0 Exterior Structure ES – 303.3.2 Exterior Walls Every Exterior wall shall be free from holes, breaks, loose or rotted boards or timbers, and any other conditions which might admit rain or dampness to the interior portions of the walls or to occupied spaces of the building. All exterior surface materials, including woods and composition or metal siding, shall be maintained weatherproof and shall be adequately protected against deterioration through the periodic application of paint or other approved protective coatings. * See Handout

Exterior wood surfaces, other than decay- resistant woods, shall be protected from the elements and decay by painting or other protective covering or treatment. Peeling, flaking and chipped paint shall be eliminated and surfaces repainted. All siding and masonry joints as well as those between the building envelope and the perimeter of windows, doors, and skylights shall be maintained weather resistant and water tight. All metal surfaces subject to rust and corrosion shall be coated to inhibit such rust and corrosion and all surfaces with rust or corrosion shall be stabilized and coated to inhibit future rust and corrosion. Oxidation stains shall be removed from exterior surfaces. 12 Daily Activities Corridor will have a varied daily patrol route Options: Tuesday through Saturday Monday through Friday – two Saturday’s a month Corridor Keeper will respond to direct inquiries from the code enforcement hotline 1-800-708-MILE

13 Code Enforcement Procedures Corridor Keeper will visit site and document code violation Documentation form will include: Picture of the violation Date Address (including jurisdiction) Indication of previous violations (date) Specific code violation If personal contact was made If educational materials were provided Documentation form will be emailed, faxed or delivered to municipal code enforcement officer All records will be up-dated at the end of each day in a data base program *See Handout

14 Personal Contact Procedures Corridor Keeper will attempt to make direct contact with home or business owner Introduction Explain the Corridor Keeper Program Identify code violation Explain process Provide education materials and community assistance as necessary

15 Municipality’s Role Municipal code enforcement officer will follow up on the Corridor Keeper documentation in the same manner in which they would respond to any received notice of violation Each municipality will be sure to notify the Corridor Keeper which code enforcement officer handles code enforcement along 8 Mile Each municipal code enforcement officer will keep track of documentation provided by Corridor Keeper Each municipal code enforcement officer will inform the Corridor keeper of community assistance programs/community organizations that are available

16 Corridor Keeper Education Materials Materials will include:Workshops Website (8MBA) Pamphlets/Newsletter/Inserts Materials will include information on:Summary of the Keeper Program Code enforcement hotline Code enforcement contacts: Corridor Keeper and Each municipality Property Maintenance (General) Seasonal or Problematic Issues (i.e. weeds and grass or abandoned automobiles)

17 Corridor Keeper Assistance Corridor Keeper will:Recruit and help organize organizations to provide property maintenance assistance Help coordinate property owners with current property maintenance assistance programs established through local municipalities Provide any needed support, as appropriate, to municipal code enforcement officers

18 Other Responsibilities Corridor Keeper will:Submit quarterly progress report to 8MBA and sub-planning committee Attend 8 hours of Continuing Education, sponsored by the Michigan Association of Code Enforcement Officers (MACEO) Identify and inform municipal code enforcement officers of potential training opportunities
