HL-LHC News: 10 WP2 Coordination:  Stephane Fartoukh stepped down as WP2 coordinator in 2013  Gianluigi Arduini accepted to take on this role  Optics well advanced  decision to merge Task 2.2 and 2.3 with Massimo as TL  Bernhard Holzer stops as WP2 Task leader and takes on new responsibility as Plasma Network coordinator BE-ABP group meeting; 19.6.2013 Review of the LIU and HL-LHC Upgrade Plans:  planned for October 2013 (machine & experiments)  review upgrade plans in view of LHC Run-I experience  timing, length and number of shutdown

European Strategy Update: 11 On 30 May, at a special meeting hosted by the European Commission in Brussels, the CERN Council formally adopted the update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics. 1.The LHC including its luminosity upgrade receive highest priority 2.Physics potential of future Linear Colliders is also well recognized in the Strategy statements 3.“Europe needs to be in a position to propose an ambitious post-LHC accelerator project at CERN by the time of the next Strategy update” and “CERN should undertake design studies for accelerator projects in a global context, with emphasis on proton-proton and electron-positron high-energy frontier machines. These design studies should be coupled to a vigorous accelerator R&D programme, including high-field magnets and high-gradient accelerating structures, in collaboration with national institutes, laboratories and universities worldwide.” BE-ABP group meeting; 19.6.2013

Future Project Studies and R&D Proposals: 12 Long list of potential activities for the ABP Group – not complete: 1. LHC 2. HL-LHC and LIU 3. HE-LHC (within existing LHC tunnel) 4. LHeC, SAPPHIRE and ERLs 5. VHE-LHC (based on a new 80km to 100km tunnel) 6. Linear Collider: ILC & CLIC 8. TLEP (based on a new 80km to 100km tunnel) 9. LEIR Biomedical applications and new ion species (e.g. NA61 etc.) 10. ELENA, HIE-ISOLDE, TSR@CERN 11. Plasma acceleration 12. Neutrino projects 13. Muon colliders etc... BE-ABP group meeting; 19.6.2013 Need to find efficient structure for incorporating these proposals in ABP studies over the next couple of years  until LHC results at 13 TeV CM define more clearly the direction

ABP Group 13 Group Structure Departures from the Group:  Mobility: Ralph Assmann left for DESY in July 2012  Stefano Redaelli took over as LHC Collimation Project Leader Edgar Mahner left for FAIR in April 2013 Christophe Podevin will leave CERN September 2013  Retirements: Jean-Paul Soucherey left CERN in 2011 (SLS retired in Nov. 2012) Jean-Luc Nougaret took early retirement in 2012  Ghislain Roy joined the ABP group in 2013 Bernard Jeanneret: will leave in September 2013 Christine Petit-Jean-Genaz: will leave in December 2013 (already no longer at CERN due to SLS) Stephan Maury: will leave beginning 2014 (SLS -> January 2015)  Christian Carli took over as ELENA Project Leader as of 2013 BE-ABP group meeting; 19.6.2013

ABP Group 14 Group Re-Organization Sections:  Organization by expertise rather than machines & projects  need to cover many options for future activities  requires structure that allows flexibility and room for new studies  horizon of end 2015 when LHC should provide results from operation at high energy BE Workshop:  Mandates for Section leaders  DH and GL received mandate until end of 2015 (end of DG term)  ABP will introduce with the new structure SL mandates (end 2015)  Fits to expected timeline for updated LHC results and new DG BE-ABP group meeting; 19.6.2013
