3 Introduction Rocks enriched in uranium and/or thorium are likely sources of Radon. 222 Rn, 220 Rn and 219 Rn (all occurring as gas), stem from the 238 U, 232 Th, and 235 U decay series, respectively. 222 Rn, has a half life of 3.825 days. Radon-monitoring applied to earthquake prediction, detection of fault and fractures zones. Linear Rn anomalies caused by migration of radon through cracks and openings (Abdoh and Pilkington, 1989). This precursor phenomenon is thought to be related strain release in the foreshock sequence that increases the emanation power of the rock due to fracturing. Xingtai earthquake (Richter magnitude, M=7.2) in 1966. Successful prediction of the Haicheng earthquake (M=7.3, on February 4, 1975, north of China). There is no clear evidence that it is really a good precursor.

6 METHODOLOGY AND RESULTS On September 06, 2009, local time 23:49, an earthquake with magnitude Mw=5.5 and epicenter on Gjorica village struck Albania. The measurements are carried out with the Lukas cell method, using the instrument Luk-4. The air sample were taken in a depth 0.6- 0.8 m.

7 METHODOLY AND RESULTS The measurements of in-soil radon concentration were done in two phases, along a profile perpendicular with the cracks present on the surface. First phase-day after the mainshock, during the phase of aftershocks. Second phase- approximately 8 months after the mainshock, during the seismically quiet phase,

9 CONCLUSION The high level of Radon concentration close to the cracks, is explained from the fact that they serve as chimney for its movement. The high level of Radon concentration in point 2 comparing to other points, is related to the fact that the measurement was carried out during an aftershock. The level or radon concentration 10 times higher close to the surface cracks, is explained from the fact that the rock pores and sedimentary cover are filled with Radon gas, and as a consequence the cover serve as shield that does not allow it to be distributed in atmosphere. There is no clear evidence that it is really a good precursor.
