6. Cotton is a polluting crop Intensively grown cotton is one of the world’s most polluting crops. It needs lots of chemicals to grow and 10 pesticide treatments every season. It also needs a lot of water.

7. Always turn the tap off If you leave the tap on when you brush your teeth, you waste between 24 and 45 litres of water.

8. TOBACCO DAMAGES SMOKERS AND THE ENVIRONMENT Tobacco needs rich soils to grow, and developing countries stop growing food to grow tobacco because it is more profitable. Tobacco is dried by burning wood. Every 300 cigarettes need the equivalent of one tree to cure them.

9. Fill up your washing machine and use Cold Water When washing clothes it’s the heating of water that uses up most of the energy. It is best to wash in cool or cold water and always fill up the machine.

10. Planes are massive polluters Although cars are very polluting, a plane gives out 0’5 Kg of C02 every 1’6 Km. “One person flying in an aeroplane for one hour is responsible for the same greenhouse gas emissions as the typical Bangladeshi in a whole year”

11. Don’t waste plastic bags It is much better not to take plastic bags from the supermarket. If you use them, try to re-use them

12. Recycle glass bottles Glass bottles are easily returned and recycled by manufacturers. Glass uses less energy than metal to recycle.
