2 STEP #1 Determine the conjugation of the verb

3 Look at the infinitive: if it ends in: -are it is 1 st Conj. -ēre it is 2 nd Conj. -ere it is 3 rd Conj. -ire it is 4 th Conj.

4 STEP #2 if it is a 1 st conjugation verb, the endings are:

6 portabamportabasportabat portabamau s portabatisportabant FOR EXAMPLE: porto, portare

7 STEP #3 if it is a 2 nd or a 3 rd conjugation verb, the endings are:

9 sedebamsedebassedebatsedebamussedebatissedebant FOR EXAMPLE: sedeo, sedēre

10 ageba m agebasagebat agebam us agebatis ageban t FOR EXAMPLE: ago, agere

11 STEP #4 if it is a 4 th conjugation verb, the endings are:

13 dormieba m dormiebasdormiebat dormiebamu s dormiebatisdormiebant FOR EXAMPLE: dormio, dormire

14 How do you translate imperfect tense verbs?

15 I was carrying… you were carrying… he was carrying…

16 You can also say: I used to carry… I kept on carrying… I began to carry… I carried…
