Bill S-8, Safe Water for First Nations Act New government legislation has been passed regarding First Nation water and wastewater management First Nations can anticipate: – Increased reporting for O&M funding – Expectations to provide a level of service regardless of the facility condition – As facility owners, be liable for health and safety incidents in their community
Current Situation Federal Government: Does not have regulations for safe drinking water for First Nations; Provides funding to First Nation that do not have operators that meet the facility classification (SWOP); Provides Enhanced O&M funding for water and wastewater facilities.
Future – After April 1, 2014 Federal Government: Will be developing water regulations; SWOP Funding may not be extended; Enhanced O&M funding for water and wastewater facilities may not be renewed; Legislation gives AANDC the authority to take over plants.
