4 Introduction Requirements if the body of God to be a true centre of spiritual Worship, Fellowship and Service i. members must be truly born again (Jn. 3:5) ii. members must be separated (1Cor.3:1) iii. dedicated (Rom. 3:1) and iv. spiritual people (Ps.133:1-3) But one very important requirement is that there must be effective Leadership Leadership is one of the most sacred privileges God confers on a person. Leadership is POWER Leadership is an awesome responsibility!

5 Definition of Leadership
Leadership is synonymous with INFLUENCE “Leadership is the capacity and the will to rally men and women to a common purpose, and the character which inspires confidence”. (Lord Montgomery) “A leader is a man who knows the road, who can keep ahead and who can pull others after him”.(John R. Mott) “A leader is a person who Knows the way, Shows the way and Goes the way” (Rev. Dr. A. De Souza) Note the three operative words – KNOWS, SHOWS, GOES. Prov. 14:12; Example - Paul and Timothy; Elijah and Elisha; Moses and Joshua; Priscilla/Aquila and Paul.

6 Christian Leadership Vs. Secular Leadership
Christian leadership is different from secular leadership. Christian leadership is a blending of natural and spiritual qualities or principles. The Christian leader’s highest effectiveness *reliance on God *submission to the dictates of the Holy Spirit In Mark 10:42-45 - Humility vs. Pride - People centred vs. Self centred (selfishness) - Love and kindness vs. Autocratic.

7 Christian Leadership Vs. Secular Leadership (Cont’d)
The 3 Ss of Christian leadership – SERVANT, STEWARD, SHEPHERD. i) The Christian leader is a servant of the people, and of God (1 Kings 12:7) ii) The Christian leader is a shepherd (1 Peter 5:2a). iii) The Christian leader is also a steward (1 Samuel 21:8) Secular leaders seek to: (a) Get power; (b) Take control; and (c) Be served, to the end of being respected, recognised and honoured. On the other hand, Christian leadership is (a) Not the exercise of power but empowerment of people The 3 Ss also stand for Selected (1Peter1:1), Sanctified (Jer.1:4-10); and Sent (Jer. 1:7/17)

8 Requirements Of Leadership For Building God’s Church
1. Have VISION What is a vision? - Spiritual Insight into the future - The ability to SEE in your mind a future state that you desire. - An idea or picture in your imagination concerning a future situation. - The ability to think or plan the future with imagination. - “Vision is the ability to see your dreams, your goals and your desires before they exist in the natural. It is the beginning, the target that gets us moving”. (Rt. Rev. Dr. John K Buabeng-Odoom)

9 Requirements Of Leadership For Building God’s Church (Cont’d)
- “Vision is a comprehensive sense of where you are, where you are going, how you are going to get there and what you will do after you get there. It is dreaming dreams about the future. It is seeing the big picture and personally painting a part of it”. (Bill Newman) Where there is no vision there is no growth, no progress, there is stagnation (death) and spiritual depression! “The greatest tragedy to befall a person is to have sight but lack vision”. (Helen Keller)

10 Requirements Of Leadership For Building God’s Church (Cont’d)
Vision depends on purpose What is purpose? - It is the reason why a thing exists (see Prov. 19:21) Importance? - If purpose is not known, abuse is inevitable “A Leader’s job is to look into the future and see the Organisation not as it is, but as it should be” (Jack Welch)

11 Requirements Of Leadership For Building God’s Church (Cont’d)
2. The Leader must Have SIGHT S= SPIRIT FILLED (Rom 8:14; Gal. 5:16; Zech. 4:6) He or she walks in the spirit, and is led by the spirit of God I= INTEGRITY OF CHARACTER (1 John 2:6; Col 1:10) “The quality of being honest and upright in character” G= GOAL ORIENTED (Neh 2:12; 6:15-17; Paul in Phil. 3:13) Goals and plans are the keys to achievement and success of vision H= HEAVENLY MINDED (Phil 3:14; Ex 15:1-18; 14:31) Being Heavenly minded, constantly seeking God’s direction and also obeying God. T= TEACHABLE (Ex. 18:17=19; 2Kings 5:3,13) The leader must be humble enough to listen to, and take advise

12 Requirements Of Leadership For Building God’s Church (Cont’d)
3. The Leader must be FAT F= FAITHFUL (1 Pet 4:10; Rev. 12:10b; 1 Cor. 4:2 ) - Diligent - Faithful to authority A= AVAILABLE (Jer. 18:6) Available for God to use as He chooses T= TEACHABLE Teachable by God, through His word, etc

13 Conclusion “Leaders are readers, Leaders are learners. And Leaders are definitely thinkers.” (Rick Warren) “Healthy churches (or organisations) are focused on developing Leaders not just followers.”(Rick Warren) May God grant us the grace to become the kind of Leaders He uses to build the Fellowship. THANK YOU
