My Plate January 2, 2012 Supplemental Activity includes eight pages of information and six question and answer activities. Also included are links for video viewing. The Supplemental Activity is intended to enhance News-2-You and Unique (ULS) content. Newspaper Overview Topic: My Plate Healthy eating makes you look and feel better. The U.S. Department of Agriculture started the My Plate program to help us make healthy food choices. The My Plate symbol shows five food groups we should choose foods from each day. Foods not in these groups, are called “extras” and are less healthy. ULS Overview Topic: Health Choosing healthy foods is an important part of having a healthy body. The My Plate symbol is a guide to help us make good food choices. Staying healthy also includes getting enough exercise. Good hygiene is important to staying healthy too. © N2Y, Inc. ©SymbolStix, LLC used with permission

3 My Plate January 2, 2012 We have many foods to choose from. Some foods are healthy for us and some are not as healthy. Let’s look at the food choices in the My Plate program. 2 © N2Y, Inc. ©SymbolStix, LLC used with permission

4 My Plate January 2, 2012 Fruits include apples, bananas, peaches, watermelons and more. Fresh fruit is healthiest, but you can also eat it dried, from a can or frozen. To eat more fruit, add bananas to cereal and keep a snack of cut-up apples in the refrigerator. Enjoy the natural sweetness and flavor of fruit – no need to add sugar! With so many kinds of fruit, it is fun to try new ones, like kiwi or starfruit. Fruit What is your favorite fruit? 3 © N2Y, Inc. ©SymbolStix, LLC used with permission

5 My Plate January 2, 2012 For vegetables, try peas, carrots, spinach, squash and more. Vegetables can be enjoyed in a juice or eaten fresh, canned or mashed. For a crunchy snack, keep carrot sticks and dip in your refrigerator. Try vegetables of many different colors: green, yellow, orange, red or purple; the darker color, the healthier! Like fruit, vegetables are filled with vitamins and minerals that help us fight disease and grow stronger. Vegetables can be fun! 6 My Plate January 2, 2012 Grain products include bread, cereal, pasta and tortillas. Grain products are made from wheat, rice, oats, corn or other grains. Whole grains are best; whole wheat bread and cornbread are better than white bread. Whole grains give us energy to move and play. They also have fiber, which helps food move through our bodies properly. Bread What is your favorite grain product? 5 © N2Y, Inc. ©SymbolStix, LLC used with permission

19 My Plate January 2, 2012 The protein group includes meat, seafood, beans and eggs. Many people get protein from meats such as beef, chicken, pork and also fish. Beans, nuts and eggs are good protein sources for people who do not eat meat. Peanut butter is many kids’ favorite snack from this food group. Protein has minerals like iron to make our muscles grow strong. Protein What is your favorite protein? 6 © N2Y, Inc. ©SymbolStix, LLC used with permission

20 My Plate January 2, 2012 Dairy foods include milk, cheese and yogurt.
Dairy foods include any kind of milk and foods made from it. It is best to choose milk and milk products that are low fat or fat-free. Dairy foods have calcium, which make bones and teeth stronger. They are especially important for kids, whose bones are growing very fast. Dairy What is your favorite dairy product? 7 © N2Y, Inc. ©SymbolStix, LLC used with permission

21 My Plate January 2, 2012 Here are some good rules for healthy eating:
Remember: half of your meal should be fruits and vegetables. Do not make healthy food less healthy by adding a lot of extras, like butter, sauces and dressings. Protein and dairy foods have different amounts of fat; choose the low fat or fat-free ones most often. Sweet extras, like candy and sugary drinks, can be bad for your teeth! Eating healthy gives you energy to have fun! Can you think of another healthy eating rule? 8 © N2Y, Inc. ©SymbolStix, LLC used with permission
