2 Writing well is not just an option for young people-it is a necessity. Along with reading comprehension, writing skill is a predictor of academic success and a basic requirement for participation in civic life and in the global economy. 3 Because of Donald Graves’ firm belief that teachers must be writers, he ends each story with an invitation to write. (Children Want to Write Editors Thomas Newkirk & Penny Kittle, p. 167) Designed by Carol Varsalona, ELA Consultant, cvarsalona@gmail.com, January 2015 Western Suffolk BOCES

11 Debrief Designed by Carol Varsalona, ELA Consultant, cvarsalona@gmail.com, January 2015 Western Suffolk BOCES All of the orthodoxies I challenge in this article arose out of read needs in the teaching of writing. In the Past, writers seldom revised, seldom had teachers listen to them, or wrote only fiction; they seldom listened to their pieces beyond two days, or were directed by the teacher, without learning to take responsibility for their work. Now that one phase of the writing process movement, the early of past problems, is over it is time to reexamine the early correction of past problems, is over it is time to reexamine the new orthodoxies, lest we cease to listen to children.
