2 Bureau of Transportation Statistics U.S. Department of Transportation Background The North American Transportation Statistics Interchange was established in 1991 Led by transportation and statistical agencies of Canada, Mexico and the United States Biannual meetings through 1998, then annual meetings Meetings rotate between Canada, Mexico and the United States XXIX Interchange: Washington, DC June 2015

3 Bureau of Transportation Statistics U.S. Department of Transportation Purpose Forum to exchange and improve statistics, methodologies and analysis of key transportation information. Opportunity to discuss critical technical issues related to transportation information across North America. Develop cooperative North American transportation statistics activities, databases and projects.

5 Bureau of Transportation Statistics U.S. Department of Transportation North American Transportation Statistics On-Line Database (NATS-OD) Located at: http://nats.sct.gob.mx/ Provides comparable data for North America Data updated once a year in the late fall – usually in November In English, Spanish and French Many data elements have 1990 data, plus annual data from 1995 to 2012

8 Bureau of Transportation Statistics U.S. Department of Transportation Proposed Map Gallery The three countries are collaborating to develop a set of maps and geographic data files for North America that will be added to the NATS Interchange web site. Transport Canada has assembled prototype road and railroad databases. Mexico and the USDOT are working to update and authenticate the prototype network files.

9 Bureau of Transportation Statistics U.S. Department of Transportation Analyzing Multimodal Corridors Transport Canada is measuring fluidity of freight movements in corridors.  Example, Shanghai to Chicago via the Port of Vancouver.  Examining total transit time, 95 th percentile transit time and average transit time for the corridors and subcomponents of those corridors. NATS Interchange participants agreed to measure the fluidity of truck movements between Windsor, Ontario and Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas.

10 Bureau of Transportation Statistics U.S. Department of Transportation Economic Classification The statistical agencies of the three countries are finalizing the North American Product Classification System. (NAPCS) NAPCS categorizes the outputs of establishments that are categorized by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). NATS Interchange members are examining relationships among NAPCS an commodity classification systems used in transport and foreign trade.
