2  This act allows measure to be made beforehand which ensure the health, safety and welfare of those people at work In addition to giving protection to people that is not involved directly to the people at work but do have some connection Controls and prevents use and possession of dangerous substance by taking preparatory action Allows action to be pre-deployed for employment medical advisory Harmful emission into the atmosphere is controlled Why was health and safety at work act 1974 created ?

3   Premises Corridors should be kept clear of objects to prevent accidents in case of emergency exit  Lighting There should be adequate light whether natural or artificial so that the workers can have good visibility  Storage Items and objects should be organized and properly stored  First aid First aid box must be provided and reachable by trained first aiders  Emissions Offensive and harmful substances should be contained and not be emitted into the atmosphere by the person in control How can safe working environment be maintained?

4   To ensure the workplace is reasonably safe for the employees to work  To prepare a health and safety policy  To provide the employees with correct P.P.E  Recording accident and injuries so that it can be avoided if the same situation is to arise  Making sure that the employee is fit enough to work by carrying out regular health checks  To provide first aid facilities in case of injuries or accidents Employer’s responsibility

5   Being careful when at work so that their health and safety is not compromised  Communicating effectively and properly with other employees to ensure co-operation and understanding therefore avoiding neglected injuries or accidents  To attend safety training when specified and following health and safety rules  Applying common sense when at work Employees responsibility

6   Proper sign boards such as yellow cone should be used when at work  Fire exit signs should be clear and visible from long distance  First aid box is located where this sign is shown  In case of fire, fire alarm is usually under this sign Health and safety signs

7   Health and safety act though does protect the employees but in order for it be effective the employees have to strictly follow the rules under the act  If there is no co-operation and understanding between employer and employees the whole point of health and safety falls apart  The measures are made beforehand so if an unknown situation was to arrive that isn’t covered by these measures the injury caused could be extreme and possibly even fatal Conclusion
