Flagellum and Cilia By Corey Carr and E.J. Kugler

STRUCTURE

CILIA AND FLAGELLA FUNCTIONS Cilia and Flagella enable a cell to move A flagellum is on the end of every sperm cell Without a flagellum sperm would not be able to fertilize an egg

CILIA Cilia is just another word for a large amount of flagella organized in dense rows Cilia can be found in the trachea to move dust and mucus particles out of the respiratory tract and into the throat. Once the mucus and dust particles are in the throat we expel them by spitting or swallowing

FLAGELLA Flagellum are the tail structures that project cells through out the body. Three types: ◦Bacterial- spin to move ◦Archaeal- similar to Bacterial, except they are non-homologous ◦Eukaryotic- move tail back and forth to move

CILIA vs. FLAGELLA Flagellum propel a cell Cilia move liquid to where it needs to be

DISEASE/MALFUNCTION If flagellum or cilia malfunction the system breaks down If sperm don’t swim, the egg cannot be fertilized If cilia fail to remove mucus and dust from the lungs, we die
