1 Chapter 6.4 – Organic and Biochemical Compounds -the carbon chains of alkanes can have branches off of them -single bonded hydrocarbon branches of alkanes are called alkyl groups -name an alkyl group by using the suffix –yl with the prefix corresponding to the number of carbons in the branch methyl ethyl propyl

2 Chapter 6.4 – Organic and Biochemical Compounds Naming alkanes with branches 1.Name the longest chain of carbon atoms using the prefix of the number of carbon atoms in the chain and the suffix –ane. 2.Add the names of the alkyl groups in front of the parent hydrocarbon in alphabetical order. 3.If there are more than one of the same alkyl group add a prefix to the name of the alkyl group. (di, tri, tetra, penta, etc.) Do this after the alkyl groups are in alphabetical order. 4.Number the carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon chain so that the alkyl groups have the lowest number possible.

3 Chapter 6.4 – Organic and Biochemical Compounds 5.Put the numbers of each alkyl group in front of the name of the alkyl group. Use hyphens to separate the numbers from the name. If there is more than one of a particular alkyl group use commas between the numbers.
