Lighting The past The future

Lamp development and efficiency

Incandescent More a heater than a light Approx. 97% heat, 3% light Short life span Cheap to buy Expensive to run

Halogen Roughly 95% heat, 5 % light Excellent colour rendering 12V, 24V and mains voltage, Popular on mass market since early ‘90s

Linear fluorescent T13 T8 T5 Available in different colour temperatures. T13-T5- older, to recent technology Relatively efficient Contain mercury

Colour temperatures Different light types have different ‘colour temperatures’ The eyes behave differently with different colours. Ie- Cool white is a better choice for reading lamps, as contrast is sharper.

Compact Fluorescent Cool white, and warm white Carefully select correct lamp for each unique situation 4 X more efficient than incandescent 2-3 x more efficient than halogen More reliable than those mentioned Not easily dimmable Contain Mercury

LED- Light emitting diode. Efficiency up to 50%** Extremely long lasting (if good quality, and if heat is dispersed) Relatively expensive for quality fittings. Price is plummeting Over long term a cheaper system than any other light form Much safer disposal Lamps must be kept cool

Light fitting design Not all efficient lamps come with satisfactory fittings…. How is inefficiency guaranteed in this fitting?

Relative life span of lamps (This comparison relates to good quality lamps) Incandescent lamps- 1-2 000 hours Halogen lamps- 2-8 000 hours CFL- 5-10 000 hours Fluorescent Tubes – 4000-10 000 LED- 30-50 000

‘Real-time’, (home) energy monitors Live energy and cost monitoring Like having a ‘speedo’ for your house Can be connected to Google for enhanced monitoring and details Pic: Current Cost

Energy, or power meters Excellent for measuring actual consumption of any plug in appliances Can also enter cost of energy to calculate running costs over any nominated period Great for single use costs- i.e. dishwashers, or long term costs- i.e. fridges.
