Ammonia preparation The refrigerator uses gaseous ammonia that is why I am going firstly start by ammonia production. Ammonia is prepared by combining nitrogen and hydrogen both as gas. Where hydrogen is obtained from air while hydrogen is by water electrolysis. T he reaction for whole process are outlined below: Cathode (reduction): 2 H 2 O(l) + 2e − → H 2 (g) + 2 OH - (aq) Anode(oxidation): 4 OH - (aq) → O 2 (g) + 2 H 2 O(l) + 4 e − Combining either half reaction pair yields the same overall decomposition of water into oxygen and Hydrogen. Overall reaction: 2 H 2 O(l) → 2 H 2 (g) + O 2 (g) After that Nitrogen obtained by fraction distillation of air is mixed with hydrogen to form Ammonia.
The reaction mixture and condition N 2 (g) + 3H 2 (g) 2NH 3 (g) for ammonia production condition: 200 atm,500°Cthe passed over and catalyst. Because the reaction is exothermic according to the chatelier principle if we increase temperature backwards reaction is favored hence ammonia is reduced,due to that better to search other means to shift equilibrium to the right and increase also the rate of reaction, and pressure, as we have 4 moles……..>2moles,hence to increase yield we can also increase pressure to 200 atm. and strengthen the vessels to prevent escaping of pressure due to that it is economically expensive. Another way is to reduce ammonia product as it is formed by taking vessel apart About catalyst: catalysts are based on iron promoted with K 2 O, CaO, SiO 2, and Al 2 O 3, We did all of that for increasing the amount of ammonia needed in daily life
