Doctrine and Covenants 112 President Spencer W. Kimball said, "How does one get humble? To me, one must constantly be reminded of his dependence. On whom dependent? On the Lord. How remind one's self? By real, constant, worshipful, grateful prayer.  Humility is teachableness—an ability to realize that all virtues and abilities are not concentrated in one's self" (The Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, 233). Now lean over to the most humble person sitting close to you and compliment them for being humble 9

Doctrine and Covenants 113 Read Isaiah 11:1–5, 10 and try to determine what the roots, stem, and rod represent; use Doctrine and Covenants 113:1–6 if you need help identifying the meaning of these three symbols. 14

Just for fun… (English is Hard) We'll begin with a box: the plural is boxes, but the plural of ox is oxen, not oxes. One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese, Yet the plural of moose should never be meese. You'll find a lone mouse, or a nest of mice, But the plural of a house is houses, not hice. If I speak of a foot, you show me your feet And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet? If one is a tooth, and a set is called teeth, Why wouldn't the plural of both be called beeth? If the singulars this and the plural is these, Should the plural of kiss be written as keese? 15 One may be that, and two may be those, Yet hat in the plural would never be hose. And the plural of cat would never be cose. We speak of brother, and also of brethren But though we say mother, we never say methren. The masculine pronouns are he, his and him, But imagine the feminine, she, shis, and shim! English is funny; on that we agree, And alphabet soup makes no sense to me.

Doctrine and Covenants 114 In Doctrine and Covenants 114:1 the Lord instructed Elder David W. Patten to prepare for a mission in the spring of 1839 in the company of eleven others. Elder Patten was not able to fill this mission because he was killed in a battle with an anti ‑ Mormon mob in October 1838. While Elder Patten remained faithful to the Church to the end of his life, some of the others called on this mission did not. Read the words to "I'll Go Where You Want Me to Go" (Hymns, no. 270). 16

Doctrine and Covenants 114 Read Doctrine and Covenants 114 (the whole section!) and also D&C 118:1, 6. What happens to people if they lose their faith and testimony? 19

Doctrine and Covenants 115 Read Doctrine and Covenants 115:5–6 How can other members of the Church give you the strength to rise above temptation? According to these verses, what must the Saints do after rising above temptation? Write Matthew 5:14–16 as a crossreference to these verses 20

Just for fun… (Cease to be Idle) If you need to get drink or use the restroom, you have ONE minute to do so. 21

Doctrine and Covenants 117 Expensive clothing Position on the basketball team Temple marriage Strong testimony Clear conscience Faithfulness in Church service Imagine that the items above described your life. Suddenly you are placed before the Savior to be judged. Which of these items would be most important to you at that moment? Read Doctrine and Covenants 117:1–4 and underline the phrase, "What is property unto me?" The read verse 5. 22

Doctrine and Covenants 117 According to Doctrine and Covenants 117:6, how is the Lord able to provide for missionary’s families? Turn to your favorite person sitting by you and share one way that Lord provides blessings during times of need for missionaries or their families? 23

Doctrine and Covenants 120 "The Lord has directed by revelation that the expenditure of his tithes will be directed by his servants, the First Presidency, the Quorum of the Twelve, and the Presiding Bishopric (see D&C 120). Those funds are spent to build and maintain temples and houses of worship, to conduct our worldwide missionary work, to translate and publish scriptures, to provide resources to redeem the dead, to fund religious education, and to support other Church purposes selected by the designated servants of the Lord" (Oaks in Conference Report, Apr. 1994, 46; or Ensign, May 1994, 35). Read Malachi 3:8–10 and Doctrine and Covenants 64:23. What blessings result from paying tithing? 24

Doctrine and Covenants 120 What do you pay tithing on? "The law is simply stated as 'one ‑ tenth of all their interest.' Interest means profit, compensation, increase. It is the wage of one employed, the profit from the operation of a business, the increase of one who grows or produces, or the income to a person from any other source" (President Hunter in Conference Report, Apr. 1964, 35). So… Should you pay tithing on allowance? If you are given money to buy clothes and have leftover money, should you pay tithing on the leftover? Let’s say you buy a used car for $2000, fix it up and sell it for $3000. How much would you tithing be? 26

Doctrine and Covenants 120 "We are not our own, we are bought with a price, we are the Lord's; our time, our talents, our gold and silver, our wheat and fine flour, our wine and our oil, our cattle, and all there is on this earth that we have in our possession is the Lord's, and he requires one ‑ tenth of this for the building up of his Kingdom" (Discourses of Brigham Young, 176). In addition to one tenth of our money and properties, what else did President Brigham Young say the Lord requires? How could you pay tithing on your time and talents? What is ten percent of twenty years? How could serving a mission be like a tithing of a young man's time? 27

MARKING – Mark these great verses…if you haven’t already D&C 90:1The keys of this kingdom shall never be taken from you D&C 90:18Set in order your houses; keep slothfulness and uncleanness far from you.
