1 Relief Efforts in Tanjung Bungah, Penang 27 th December 2004 onwards Penang Office for Human Development Diocese of Penang POHD

2 Damaged homes along Tg. Bungah road. Many families were caught unawares. Vehicles were damaged too.

3 Fisherman post/facilities were destroyed. Over 6000 fishermen were affected. Losses extimated RM29.3 mil (US7.71mil).

4 Over 1,600 damaged houses in North Malaysia Government building temporary housing. Families lost all their belongings.

5 Homes were covered in 1 inch of mud. Debris was cleared out manually. The stench was unbearable.

6 Clearing mud covered carpets was tough. Large pieces of glass and metal everywhere. Volunteers worked hard for 4 days.

7 Everyone was covered in mud! Families were very grateful for the help. It was a an emotional experience.

9 Pillows & mattresses were distributed. Families filled out forms for the aid. A house to house survey was first conducted.

10 Cooking stoves and utensils were distributed. Over 50 individuals benefited from the aid. Some of the homes will be rebuilt too.

11 Some families did not qualify for the aid as their homes were not damaged by the waves. We had a tough time explaining that the aid was for those most in need.

13 Items included clothes, dry food, drinks and medical supplies. The container transported the supplies to Port Klang.

14 Lots of bottled water was donated by the public. The relief centre was soon full of supplies!

16 Supplies were also stored at Swettenham Port in Penang. Warehouse provided by the State Government.

19 Volunteers manually loaded the Cipta Karya. POHD hired the vessel for this purpose. 165 tonnes of aid was packed into the vessel.

20 The vessel sailed to Port Kuengbuekeh in Lhoksuemawe. The aid was received by NGO coalition, Forum LSM Aceh 28 hours later.

21 Krungbuekueh Port in Lhoksuemawe, Aceh Port authorities have agreed to receive POHD vessels with minimal hassle.

23 3 rd shipment weight approx. 200 tonnes. More organised this time – aid palletised, film wrapped and strapped for safer handling. Vessel concerns – cost and security has delayed shipment to Aceh.
