3 Tribal Population of India 8.43 crores (2001 census of India) 8.2 % of the total population 700 Scheduled Tribes 33 tribes inhabit state of Andhra Pradesh Andh, Bagata, Bhil, Gond, Porja, Lambadis, Valmiki, Koya, Kotia, Jatapus, Konda Doras etc Illiterate, Innocent, Poor, easily taken advantage of, Ignorant Access to valuable forest produce, fresh and cheap commodities

4 Tribal families visit to sell surplus produce & buy essential commodities One of the most decentralized & sustainable economic activity Tribal Markets (Shandies) Main marketing place, social and news disseminating centre 200 villages in a 25-30 km. radius Wholesale buyers Artisans Service providers Transport Agencies Monitoring Agencies Annual Turnover of a shandy in Halia village of Nalgonda District is Rs.1.5 crores. Producers of – Agricultural Products Forest Products Animal Products Cosmetics Cloth products etc

5 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY To Study the Demand-Supply of commodities in tribal markets. To explore the needs of tribal people with reference to commodities To record the experiences of tribal people regarding perceptions of present tribal markets and expectations of future markets. To study aspects such as barter system, role of middlemen & others, typical to tribal markets and assess their impact.
