05-11-2013 1 Q1-Q3 Cryostat Ideas Mike Anerella / Paul Kovach / Jesse Schmalzle November 5, 2013

05-11-2013 2 Relevant prior experience (1) For RHIC arc dipoles & LHC D1 dipoles, cold masses are supported on 2 plastic posts separated by heat shield intercept plates within cryostat

05-11-2013 3 Relevant prior experience (2) For RHIC e-Lens superconducting solenoid, for cost savings spare standard “CQS” cryostats were used Cold mass barely fit, centered inside cryostat →vertical cylinders; “spool pieces” were added to cryostat, downward from existing port locations, to house support posts

05-11-2013 4 RHIC e-Lens magnet details Blue = standard RHIC cryostat Orange = standard RHIC upper & lower plastic support posts Grey = cryostat cylinder extension & standard port cover Silver = heat shield plate & extension cradle upper post lower post heat shield plate cryostat extension cylinder cryostat port cover O-ring stainless backing ring

05-11-2013 5 application to Q1-Q3 (1) Review of LHC D2/D4 Assembly: Single support post, bolted to cradle Heat shield plate epoxied to post o.d. Sliding, keyed support inside post spacer Weight supported by post spacer, retaining ring

05-11-2013 6 application to Q1-Q3 (2) Ø890 ID cryostatØ106 He II out (pumping line)Ø35 Shield coolingCold mass cradle“short” upper postHeat shield plate“standard” lower postCryostat extension cylinder QXF Assembly Post spacerShim, retaining ringØ630 cold mass Upper post, heat shield detail

05-11-2013 7 Existing (BNL) LHC insertion tooling Cold mass buildup area Cryostat support / post installation area Tooling removal area Tooling used for LHC D2, D3, D4 production at BNL (D1 used separate tooling) Cryostat support / post installation tooling provided by CERN (shortened to 10 m length at BNL)

05-11-2013 8 insertion tooling / assembly detail Cold mass sledTow plateCryostat extension cylinder fits within existing tooling clearance hole Cold mass / upper post / heat shield slide into cryostat Lower post is bolted to upper post, and post spacer, shim & retaining ring are installed while cold mass is held by jack / hoists

05-11-2013 9 Summary Cold mass can be installed in preferred “downward offset” location with standard diameter cryostat “short” upper post and “standard” lower post permit assembly while reducing heat load Cryostat cylinder extension retains full function of existing design and fits within clearance of present (BNL) LHC insertion tooling Alternately, if desired cryostat extension could be used with slightly increased diameter cryostat & centered cold mass to reduce heat load (also favorable due to saturation?)
