Things to know about this couple: o They are always together no matter what. o They are always flying over the speech. They don’t like books; they prefer poems and magazine articles. They let others know when text has been borrowed. Sometimes they may have double dates, where regular text separates dialogue and causes more than one set of a couple.

You could look funny if you don’t use them right!  Quotation Marks, Joey from Friends Quotation Marks, Joey from Friends We must question what is implied by washing hands if it is quotation marks.

Quotation marks are used to indicate direct speech. This shows that these are the exact words said by a person. Example: “I can’t go to the mall because I have to study for a test,” said Katie. Indirect speech is when you summarize what someone else said. Example: Katie can’t go to the mall because she has to study for a test.

The candidate said, “My first priority will be creating new jobs.” Since quotation marks show someone’s exact spoken words, the first quotation mark goes before the first word and the other goes behind the last word. Make sure to capitalize the first letter of the dialogue, unless it is divided with text where the second part would be lower case. “You can vote,” he reminded us, “on your way home from work.”

Hey guys! That rule was super important, but you need to know an exception!! If a person’s speech has ended, then the dialogue picks up again— punctuate accordingly. Use a period just as you would in a normal sentence. “Don’t forget to vote,” he called out. “Every vote counts!”

Guided Practice: Rewrite the following sentences correctly in your notebook. Share and discuss responses with shoulder partner. 1.my next priority will be to reduce taxed he added. 2.Senator Jones said if you vote for me, I will work hard for you 3.Being President is like riding a tiger said Harry S. Truman. a man has to keep riding or be swallowed

Place commas and periods inside of quotation marks. Place exclamation marks and question marks inside the quotation marks if they belong to the dialogue. Use single quotation marks if they enclose a title or quote inside quotation marks. “Last night,” said Liz, “I listened to a debate.” Liz asked, “Whom are you voting for?” “Carol thought you said ‘Vote for me.’ Is this true?”

Hey hey! Just dropping in to say that a comma is used to set up dialogue or to show that it is ending. It’s pretty important to know. It’s not always used if another type of punctuation takes its place. “Don’t get excited!” exclaimed Liz.

Guided Practice: With your shoulder buddy, rewrite each sentence correctly. 1. Was it Thoreau who said I have received no more than one or two letters in my life that were worth postage 2. Stephanie asked did you hear mark say Did you do the dishes tonight 3. Are you serious the teacher asked or are You just trying to be funny If so, I’m not amused.

Use quotation marks to enclose the following titles: · Poem: "The Raven" · Short story: "The Last Leaf" · Song: "Oh, Canada!" · Report: "The Effects of Global Warming on Artic Animals" · Article: "Lindsay Lohan Speaks Out" · Book Chapter: "Nancy Discovers the Secret Passage"

Guided Practice: Decide how to punctuate the following titles. 1.Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout (Poem) 2.Three Century Woman (Short Story) 3.Wrecking Ball (Song) 4.Coming Back Stronger (novel) 5.The Secret Lives of Disney Actors (Article)

RULE #4 Using quotation marks in MLA research  At the end of dialogue or words spoken directly from literature, place the in-text citation after the closed quotation mark. Then, punctuate the sentence accordingly. Example: Romantic poetry is characterized by the "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (Wordsworth 263). Author’s Last Name Page #
