8. Place commas and periods inside of quotation marks. Place exclamation marks and question marks inside the quotation marks if they belong to the dialogue. 9. Hey hey! Just dropping in to say that a comma is used to set up dialogue or to show that it is ending. It’s pretty important to know. It’s not always used if another type of punctuation takes its place. “Don’t get excited!” exclaimed Liz.
