Day 2 Did Columbus and Spain “Discover” America? APUSH Themes & S.P.R.I.T.E. AUGUST 29, 2011

OBJECTIVES I can place the themes of American History under the categories in SPRITE. I can defend a role in the “Who is Guilty of Murdering the Tainos?” using primary sources and background knowledge. I will understand two views on Columbus – discoverer, great navigator, or cruel imperialist.

WHAT IS SPRITE? SPRITE stands for the : Social Political Religious Intellectual Technological Economic … views of history.

HOW WILL WE USE SPRITE After taking notes on the chapter, read over your notes. Jot down the SPRITE information for this chapter. In most chapters you will at least get three of the six letters to have some information. In many chapters, the largest amount of info will be under S,P, & E

HOW DO THE APUSH THEMES RELATE TO SPRITE? In #1 –# 5 groups, cooperate to align the themes and what they encompass under the SPRITE headings. Roles: Leader (survey each person’s ideas for each theme), Writer, Speaker All groups will compare notes with the class A copy of our notes will be compiled and put on our wikispace.

WHO MURDERED THE TAINOS? Your assigned roles were: Columbus Colubus’ Men King Ferdinand/Queen Isabella Tainos Empire Building

Read your role’s background material Your group needs to decide if you are guilty or not guilty. You need to have one person accuse another role of being guilty. You need to have one person defend your group as not guilty/ or guilty but less than the other groups. You will use the primary and secondary sources, the background from Chapter 2, and your knowledge of European exploration for your defense.

NEW MEMBERS TO THE CLASS Mrs. Murphy will be the prosecutor. New members to the class will be the jury.

EXIT TICKET Write who you think is most guilty and why. Write who you think is least guilty and why. Do you think Columbus and Spain should be judged by 21 st century morality or accepted as men/countries of their time period?
