2 Pestalozzi Children’s Foundation / emPower 2012 International Development Cooperation Declaration of the Rights of the Child (plain language version) 1.All children have the right to what follows, no matter what their race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, or where they were born or who they were born to. 2.You have the special right to grow up and to develop physically and spiritually in a healthy and normal way, free and with dignity. 3.You have a right to a name and to be a member of a country. 4.You have a right to special care and protection and to good food, housing and medical services. 5.You have the right to special care if handicapped in any way. 6.You have the right to love and understanding, preferably from parents and family, but from the government where these cannot help. 7.You have the right to go to school for free, to play, and to have an equal chance to develop yourself and to learn to be responsible and useful. Your parents have special responsibilities for your education and guidance. 8.You have the right always to be among the first to get help. 9.You have the right to be protected against cruel acts or exploitation, e.g. you shall not be obliged to do work which hinders your development both physically and mentally. You should not work before a minimum age and never when that would hinder your health, and your moral and physical development. 10. You should be taught peace, understanding, tolerance and friendship among all people. 2

4 Education is a fundamental human right:  every child is entitled to it  it is critical to our development as individuals and as societies  it helps pave the way to a successful and productive future When we ensure that children have access to quality education that is rooted in gender equality, we create a ripple effect of opportunity that impacts generations to come. 4

Children's play involves  exploration  language experimentation  cognition  development of social skills Children learn how to behave by imitating the behavior of those closest to them. As such, parents, teachers and caregivers need the knowledge and skills necessary to provide the child with the best early learning environment and interaction. 5

Reduce gender and other disparities that hamper increased access to, participation in and completion of a quality basic education.. Improve education quality and increase school retention, completion and achievement rates. Restore education in emergency, post-conflict and transition environments, and safeguard education systems against fallout from the AIDS epidemic 8

10 Pestalozzi Children’s Foundation / emPower 2012 International Development Cooperation Languages in Education The importance of mother-tongue education A language disappears on average every two weeks, carrying with it an entire cultural and intellectual heritage. The protection of linguistic diversity is a challenge for sustainable development. Languages ​​ convey knowledge and local know-how, they are an irreplaceable tool for sustainability. 10 There exists a vital interaction between linguistic and cultural diversity. The principle of equality of all cultures and languages should be acknowledged.

11 Pestalozzi Children’s Foundation / emPower 2012 International Development Cooperation Literacy Literacy is a human right, a tool of personal empowerment and a tool for social development. Educational opportunities depend on literacy. 11 Literacy is at the heart of basic education for all, and essential for eradicating poverty, reducing child mortality, curbing population growth, achieving gender equality and ensuring sustainable development, peace and democracy.

12 Pestalozzi Children’s Foundation / emPower 2012 International Development Cooperation Inclusive Education Today, 75 million children are excluded from education. Seven out of ten live in sub-Saharan Africa or South and West Asia. Sixty per cent of them are girls living in Arab States and sixty-six per cent in South and West Asia. The main reasons for exclusion are poverty, gender inequity, disability, child labour, speaking a minority language, belonging to an indigenous people, and living a nomadic or rural lifestyle. 12 It focuses particularly on vulnerable and marginalized groups*, it aims at developing the full potential of every individual
