6 Wednesday March 11 th Seniors  In Chapter II, we learn that Hrothgar suffered the “woes and unending travails” of dealing with Grendel for twelve years. Grendel harassed Hrothgar, hated him, murdered and massacred his people, and refused to speak with any of the Danish earls about making a pact of peace. We are not told why Grendel carried this much hatred in him. We can only surmise what Grendel’s life was like and why he behaved as he did. Writing from Grendel’s perspective, explain what it feels like to be you, a “hell-wizard,” a “dark death-shadow.” Why do you “lie in wait for old and young alike, prowling about and lurking at night on the misty moors”? Don’t just say you are angry, and it feels horrible. Explain it as if you were telling your best friend about how upset and depressed you have been over something that has happened to you.
