Friction causes stress to build up as the rock resists movement. –D. When the rocks finally move, it is suddenly, and releases lots of energy.

3. II. Types of Stress II. Types of Stress –A. Shearing  1. Pushes rock in opposite directions. –B. Tension  1. Pulls rock apart. –C. Compression  1. Pushes rock together. –D. All three cause deformation, or a change in the earth’s crust.

6. –B. Normal Fault  1. Caused by tension  2. Rock on top of the fault slips downward

8. –C. Reverse Fault  1. Caused by compression  2. Rock on top of the fault pushes up
