Earth’s Crust in Motion

I. Earthquakes I. Earthquakes –A. The shaking that results from movement of rock beneath the Earth’s surface. –B. Rocks along faults are pushed or pulled against each other due to stress. –C. Friction causes stress to build up as the rock resists movement. –D. When the rocks finally move, it is suddenly, and releases lots of energy.

II. Types of Stress II. Types of Stress –A. Shearing  1. Pushes rock in opposite directions. –B. Tension  1. Pulls rock apart. –C. Compression  1. Pushes rock together. –D. All three cause deformation, or a change in the earth’s crust.

III. Types of Faults III. Types of Faults –A. Strike-slip Fault  1. Caused by shearing  2. Rocks slip past each other sideways

–B. Normal Fault  1. Caused by tension  2. Rock on top of the fault slips downward

–C. Reverse Fault  1. Caused by compression  2. Rock on top of the fault pushes up
