Music Music

Review: Week 1 1.Music is a “hot button” with many Christians today. 2.Music is becoming a “personal god.” 3.Music invades our culture in ways never known to mankind. 4.Music is a very Biblical matter. God has tons to say about music.

Review: Week 2  Music is the gauge by which you can determine what the world is pursuing.  Amoral- “being neither moral nor immoral” (Webster Dictionary)  Many people believe that music is amoral (neutral) (non-emotional). “The sound doesn’t effect me, just the lyrics.”  This is where CCM supporters go wrong. They believe that music is neutral and that the lyrics justify the worldly music style.  Proof: Practically, Worldly, Biblically

Review: Week 3  Many Rock artists emphasize and build music around the rhythm.  Satan’s Mission: To exalt himself above God.  Many Christians don’t really believe that the devil is real.  2 Cor. 11:14-15

Review: Week 4  There is nothing wrong with new…  …however it is wrong when it disobeys God’s commandments in the Bible.  CCMers disobeys God’s commandment on separation.  “Music always produces a lifestyle”  CCM is diluting Biblical Christianity!  Rom 12:2; Gal. 1:10; 1 Pet. 1:14-16; Jam 4:4; 1Jh. 2:15-16

Review: Week 5  Bible filtering passage: Gal. 5:16-25  Run all your music through this filter!  All music will either endorse the works of the flesh or the fruits of the Spirit.  Walking/ Living in the Spirit is a COMMAND from God’s Word!

The Power of Godly Music

Godly music…  Honors God.  Magnifies His Son.  Resists Satan.  Encourages and strengthens.  Transforms us into His image.  Pleases God.  Brings joy to the heart.  Sets one apart from the world.  Establishes our heart in faith.  Places God’s peace in our hearts.  Sets our affection on things above.

Does your Music…  1) Help you hear the Word of God clearly?  2) Match up with the glory of God?  3) Unify or divide Christians?  4) Style encourage you to disciplined, godly living?  5) Help you separate yourself from the world?  6) Would you expect to find your kind of music in heaven?

Just as worldly music contributes to a worldly lifestyle, godly music contributes to a godly lifestyle.

Action Time! The worst thing you could do is to do NOTHING!

Action #1 Get your Bible!

 2 Timothy 3:16-17- All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.  Pastor Danny Sweatt- “If it is not scriptural, it has no place in the life of the Christian…each song must be carefully scrutinized in the light of the Bible.” (Biblical Music, pg. 95)  Anything other than your Bible is like building your life on sand.  Turn to Joshua 1:8

Action #2 Be filled with the Spirit!

 Turn to Ephesians 5:18-20  Are you under the control of the Holy Spirit?  Many Christians think they are, but are not!  Notice how God brings music into the picture after commanding us to be filled with the Spirit.

Action #3 Pray through your music one song at a time!

Prayer  Take the time to pray through each song you have. Ask God if He is honored by it.  As you pray read the lyrics and ask God, “are these lyrics helping me grow closer to you?”  As you pray ask God, “Does this sound bring glory to your name or does it please me?”

Action #4 Put off…Put on! Turn to Ephesians 4:17-24

Old Man New Man HOLINESSRIGHTEOUSNESSLUSTDESTRUCTION DeceitTruth Eph. 4:22-24

Put OFF… Put ON !  This is known as the “replacement principle.”  v.21- are you hearing and being teachable?  V.22- Put off the old man! It’s corrupt!  Put off: “lay aside; cast off; repentance from sin”  The old man died in salvation, but the habits still remain.  Former conversation: “previous behavior”  Old man: Sinful nature; “old self which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires.”  The old man’s desires promise long lasting joy but fail to provide it.

Put OFF… Put ON !  V.23- renewed: “renovate; reform”  Mind: “your intellect; understanding”  Many of your battles are won or lost in the mind.  V.24- Put on the new man! Holiness!  Created: “made; founded; established”  Righteousness: “love for what is right & true”  Holiness: “entirely separated from evil, hates evil.”

Put OFF… Put ON !  According to this passage you are commanded to put off the old man. If you do not they you are in disobedience to God’s Word.  The worst thing you could do is to not put off your worldly, fleshly music!

How do I put off ? 1.Acknowledge the Holy Spirit’s conviction and obey! God is honored! 2.Take Action! Put off that music! 3.How? 1.Trash or delete it! 2.Avoid! 3.Bring it to me and we will have a bonfire! 4.Where?  ipod, CDs, radio, Facebook, Computer, TV, Cell, Friends

SHUT DOWN any way you would have access to that music!

NOW, put on!  Once you put off your music you HAVE to put on. This is what the passage is teaching.  There must be a replacement, otherwise you will just go back to your sin.  How do I put on?

Put ON!  Choose God-honoring, biblical music.  Library, Wilds, Soundforth, Sacredaudio.com, Majesty Music, spea.org  Be Patient! You will not like it at first.  Pray and depend on God for strength to obey His Word.  Get Accountability! Safety in numbers.

Action #5 Warn Others!

 The devil wants to keep you silent!  Many of your peers are being deceived and you have the opportunity to help them!  One of the most devastating things that could happen is that godly teens are kept silent!  Turn to Ezekiel 3:20-21

Warn Others!  The Christian teens you know who listen to ungodly music or CCM are in disobedience to God’s commandments on holiness and separation.  You are commanded to warn them.  How?

How to warn them?  Prayerfully- Bath everything in prayer.  Biblically- Scripture is sufficient.  Humbly- Do not be argumentative.  Urgently- Time is going fast!  Remember, Teach the teachable!

REMEMBER !!!  Music is changing you!  You will reap what you sow! (Gal. 6:7-8)  Give it time!  CCM: Laid back Christians  Rock: Sex/ Carnality  Music always produces a lifestyle!

Conclusion  I have enjoyed this study on music!  There is no way I have covered every little detail nor answered all your questions.  I have prayed that is was a conviction, warning, and encouragement to you!  I’m always here for YOU! Come see me!
