To 160 th Ave Church of Christ
Ephesians 2:1-7 1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
The Profit: A Commentary on our Spiritual Lives Our “business” was failing! (Eph. 2:1-3) God desires to save us and “makes an investment” (Eph. 2:4-7) But we must make some drastic changes! – Most will be unwilling to change – Few will desire to change and will propser eternally
People can make Incredible Changes! Physically - Olivia Ward (lost 129 lbs)
People can make Incredible Changes! Physically - Michael Ventrella (lost 264)
People can make Incredible Changes! Spiritually – Language – Habits/Addictions – Attitudes – Love – Sexual preferences YOU CAN MAKE INCREDIBLE CHANGES!!!
WE are COMMANDED to make incredible changes 1 Corinthians 6: 9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 Such were some of you ; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. We are commanded to Repent. (Acts 2:38; Acts 17:30; Matt. 3:2, 8; Luke 13:3) Commands against Crude Joking (Eph. 5:4) Commanded not to worry (Matt. 6) Commanded to love your spouse (Eph 5) GOD DOES NOT COMMAND THINGS THAT ARE IMPOSSIBLE
We Can Only Change If: We trust God! – God is trustworthy – Trust His commands – Trust that change is possible – Trust that His way is best We Desire Change! – ONLY YOU CAN CHANGE YOURSELF!!! 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance Matt. 23: 37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.
Things that Make Change Difficult: Change requires you to be humble (admit wrongs, swallow pride) – Ex. Pharaoh (Exod. 5-14) – Admitting you are wrong seems shameful. (Luke 18:9-14) Change is Uncomfortable – You feel like it will be difficult. – You feel like you are already doing ok on your own
