The false joy

The joy of desires  So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate (Gn 3,6)  That the triumphing of the wicked is short, And the joy of the hypocrite is but for a moment? (Job 20:5)  Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. (Jm 4:9)  And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry."' (Lk 12:19)

The joy of showing off  But when Herod's birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod. Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, "Give me John the Baptist's head here on a platter." And the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he commanded it to be given to her. So he sent and had John beheaded in prison. (Mt 14:6-10)

Belshazzar's Feast YOU HAVE BEEN WEIGHED IN THE BALANCES, AND FOUND WANTING  Then they brought the gold vessels that had been taken from the temple of the house of God which had been in Jerusalem; and the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines drank from them. 4 They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze and iron, wood and stone. 5 In the same hour the fingers of a man's hand appeared and wrote opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king's palace; and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote. (Dn 5:3-5)

Nabal Party  Now there was a man in Maon whose business was in Carmel, and the man was very rich. He had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats. And he was shearing his sheep in Carmel. 3 The name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail. And she was a woman of good understanding and beautiful appearance; but the man was harsh and evil in his doings. He was of the house of Caleb. 4 When David heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his sheep, 5 David sent ten young men; and David said to the young men, "Go up to Carmel, go to Nabal, and greet him in my name. (1 Sm 25:2- 5)

King Ahasuerus  in those days when King Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the citadel, that in the third year of his reign he made a feast for all his officials and servants--the powers of Persia and Media, the nobles, and the princes of the provinces being before him-- when he showed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the splendor of his excellent majesty for many days, one hundred and eighty days in all And when these days were completed, the king made a feast lasting seven days for all the people who were present in Shushan the citadel, from great to small, in the court of the garden of the king's palace. …

King Ahasuerus  On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded…. to bring Queen Vashti before the king, wearing her royal crown, in order to show her beauty to …"What shall we do to Queen Vashti, according to law, because she did not obey the command of King Ahasuerus brought to her "King Ahasuerus commanded Queen Vashti to be brought in before him, but she did not come. it pleases the king, let a royal decree go out from him, and let it be recorded in the laws of the Persians and the Medes, so that it will not be altered, that Vashti shall come no more before King Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal position to another who is better than she (Esther1)

Pseudo Spiritual joy  These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness (Mk 4:16)  Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name." And He said to them, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven." (Lk 10:17-20)  These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit. (Jude 1:19)

The joy of self-loving Vain glory  So on a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat on his throne and gave an oration to them. And the people kept shouting, "The voice of a god and not of a man!" Then immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and died. (Acts 12:21-23)

The joy of self-loving Hatredness  Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Him to them. And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. So he sought how he might conveniently betray Him. (Mk 14:10-11)

 "If I have made gold my hope, Or said to fine gold, "You are my confidence';If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, And because my hand had gained much; If I have observed the sun when it shines, Or the moon moving in brightness, So that my heart has been secretly enticed, And my mouth has kissed my hand; This also would be an iniquity deserving of judgment, For I would have denied God who is above. "If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him who hated me, Or lifted myself up when evil found him (Job 31:24-29)
