7 Writing my economic body paragraph- BEST There were very different economic conditions in the southern colonies from 1607-1775, as compared to the New England and middle colonies. As a result of the introduction of tobacco to Virginia by John Rolfe in 1610, Virginia grew into a one crop plantation economy. Other plantation crops grown in the south were rice and indigo grown in the Carolinas and Georgia. The export of these plantation crops dominated the southern economy. The geography of New England was not conducive to large-scale plantation crops. In comparison, the economy in New England was based on fur, fish, and timber. Furs were exchanged with Native Americans, fisheries were established all along the New England coast, and the many forests resulted in lumber being a primary export product during the mercantilist colonial period. The only industry allowed during the colonial era was shipbuilding. In the middle colonies, cattle and grain were exported through the profitable seaport cities of New York and Philadelphia. The early establishment of plantation crops created a very different economic structure in the southern colonies as compared to the New England and middle colonies.
