Creation or Evolution? To describe different views about how living things were made To evaluate different views of how living things were made To consider if there is a conflict between science and religion about Creation Darwinism (evolution) Creationism How different are these two accounts of how life arrived on earth?

1.How would you organise these views, along a line from “God did it” to “God did not do it” 2.Draw a long arrow and write out the views on your arrow 3.Explain what you believe and why. 4.Explain why you don’t agree with one or two of the other views. **If you believe in pure Darwinism does that mean you don’t believe in God? B. We are creationists. -We believe God created everything exactly as it says in the Bible. -God made all creatures perfect, all at once, separately -Creatures have evolved from other creatures. -Man is not evolved from apes. -Fossils are a trick played by God or the scientists are lying. A.We believe in Intelligent Design -Evolution is not by blind chance and accidents in nature -God guides evolution in specific ways -God made sure that we humans would “evolve” on earth one day. C. We believe in Special Creation. -We believe in Darwin & evolution -BUT we also believe that God gave one set of humans a spiritual soul, by a special act of creation. -This pair of humans sinned against God (original sin) -All humans are descended from this one set of humans-with-souls D. We are Darwinists. -We believe in Darwin and evolution -We believe evolution is a completely natural process, based on chance and accident -We believe that no “intelligent being” guided this process. - No one planned that we would exist. It is just accidental that we evolved.

The Church believes in Special Creation: creatures have evolved by natural selection, like Darwin says but God gave one set of original parents a spiritual nature – by a special act of His creation. (science cannot prove that we even have souls given by God) What do you think the Catholic Church believes? Draw God giving Adam, the first man, a spiritual soul. Title it” “Special Creation”

Explain for question, decide what is the right answer and why.

A. Your vet says that there are some things about the way animals are made, that couldn’t have just happened by accident. They had to be planned. Are they: A creationist? Intelligent design? A darwinist?

B. Your science teacher has brought in a fossil of a dinosaur bone into school. What does it prove? Creationism? Intelligent design? Darwinism?

C. Your RE teacher says that human beings are different from all other creatures in the animal kingdom, but not perfectly designed. Are they: A creationist? A special creationist? A darwinist?

D. Your biology teacher says it is OK to treat human beings just like other animals. Are they: A special creationist? A darwinist? Intelligent design?

E. Your next door neighbour says that humans used to walk with dinosaurs. Are they: A special creationist? A darwinist? A creationist?

F. A radio presenter says that human beings might very well never have existed. Are they: A special creationist? A darwinist? Intelligent design?
