Content 1.Patient’s history and background 2.Possible treatment plans 3.Most suitable treatment plan and treatment plan of choice 4.Laboratory procedures 5.References

Patient’s History and Background Patient was involved in a motorcar accident in 1999 Lost left ear and fractured left side of his mandible Undergone four operations

Patient’s History and Background cont. Internal implants were placed in the mandible Implants were rejected due to active Hepatitis B Implants were removed

Patient’s History and Background cont. A prosthetic ear was made in 2000 by Mr. A Jansen a former student Due to active Hepatitis B implants could not be used Mechanical retention was used with aid of spectacles Patient has now recovered from Hepatitis B This year the prosthesis needs to be replaced

Possible Treatment Plan #1 Placement of implants into the left side of patients’ skull Using a dolder bar attachment to attach prosthetic ear 1

Possible Treatment Plan # 2 Using old mechanical retention to keep prosthesis in place Fabricating a new ear prosthesis

Possible Treatment Plan # 3 Fabricating a new prosthesis Using a medical adhesive for prosthesis retention. 2

Most suitable treatment plan Implants with dolder bar attachment  Reasons: Excellent retention Maximum patient confidence Patient comfort 3

Laboratory procedures Impression arrives Model is poured with laboratory analogues Plastic sleeves attached to analogues

Laboratory procedures cont. Dolder bar waxed up Wax bar removed from analogues Wax bar invested and cast Metal bar finished Now the prosthesis can be made

Laboratory procedures cont. The ear is sculpted on the model The sculpted ear is tried on patient 4

Laboratory procedures cont. Mould is made Mould is packed After polymerization prosthesis is removed from mould

Laboratory procedures cont. Extrinsic colouring added Final fitment on patient 3
