2. INTRODUCTION In the last decade, one of the main automatic measuring devices for the metal industries, have become coordinate measuring machines (CMM). Powerful programming and hardware support is allowing to measure and analyze the acquired results, using the mathematical, graphical and statistical methods of data sorting. At the same time, in the metal industries there’s a tendency of application the machining on the CNC lathes with 4 and 5 axes, that allows to concentrate operations using one machine and, even, to complete the part in one mounting. Such principal of machining is reducing the amount of operations, and as a consequence, the deviations during the mounting of the parts are minimal! As a result it is necessary to check the part, as minimum, from 5 sides.

3. The mounting using vise won’t let measure the bottom side of the part – the RENISHAW knob won’t descend lower than 110 mm from the surface of the CMM table. Classical example: the part is machined on 5 sides

4. Also, the vise complicates the approach to the part.

5. The only solution left is to lift the part on a block or prism and… glue it on with plasticine.

6. Unreliability of fixating (for small parts is not applicable at all due to minimal flatness of the contacting surfaces). Inaccuracy in the mounting of the part, which calls for the manual alignment, and as a consequence, the part checking time is much longer. However, this method is far from perfect. It’s minuses are: So, what is necessary for the more effective application of very expensive measuring equipment ?
