2 School environments pose hazards all their own Back safety Electrical safety Fires and fire extinguishers Hazard communication Slips, trips and falls Housekeeping Ergonomics

3 Back Safety B is for BALANCE. A is for ALIGN. C stands for CONTRACT your stomach muscles and keep the load CLOSE to your body. K is for KNEES.

4 Electrical Safety Extension cords may not be used as permanent wiring Surge protectors must be plugged directly into a wall outlet, not into another surge protector or extension cord Breakers should not be reset without finding a cause for outage Frayed power cords should not be used Do not overload circuits Electrical outlets within six feet of a water source require a GFCI

6 Hazard Communication A right to know About anything that poses a health or physical danger Additional hazardous chemicals or materials Material Safety Data Sheets A right to tell –Report hazards or concerns without reprisal

8 Housekeeping  Keep doorways and aisles unobstructed and free of clutter  Close drawers when not in use; open only 1 file drawer at a time  Wipe up spills immediately  Cut loose carpet threads  Prevent and eliminate mold and excessive dust  Put extension cords away when not in use

9 Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Do not overwater plants—moisture can accumulate causing mildew and mold problems. Report water leaks. Keep work area clean—don’t store open food. Wipe down desks, phones, computer keyboards, and door handles. Use fragrances sparingly.
