3 Immigrants came to the US and settled all along the Atlantic Coast. Each colony had different climate and resources

4 Northwest Territories 1783

5 The Northwest Ordinance was passed by the Articles of Confederation. It set a pattern for orderly growth in the Northwest Territory.

6 Louisiana Purchase 1803 President Jefferson bought the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon, the leader of France for $15 million. It doubled the size of the US.

8 Florida 1810

9 US relations with Spain were tense. President Monroe ordered Spain to control the Seminoles in Florida. Spain ceded Florida to the US.

10 British Cession 1818, 1842

11 In the Convention of 1818 with the British, an agreement was made to set a boundary at the 49 th parallel on the US and Canadian Border.

12 Texas 1845

13 Texas joined the US by annexation in They became the 28 th state in the US. James K Polk was president.

14 Oregon 1846

15 The US and Britain jointly occupied the Oregon Territory. They agreed to split the territory between them.

16 Mexican Cession 1848

17 After the Mexican War, Mexico ceded land to the US. These states were California CA, Nevada NV, Utah UT, Arizona AZ, New Mexico NM, Colorado CO, and Wyoming WY.

18 Gadsden Purchase 1853

19 The government of US asked Mexico to purchase this land to build a railroad. Mexico sold the land to the US for $10 million

20 Cede/Cession- to surrender by treaty or agreement Annex/Annexation- the act of adding or joining a territory to an existing one Manifest Destiny- the belief that the US was destined to stretch across the continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean
