26 Key Preliminary Findings Texas ranks second (with Pa) in the U.S. in its number of pharmacy schools. Applications to pharmacy school increased by 134 percent from 2000 to 2005. Graduates increased by 61 percent from 2000 to 2005 and are projected to increase by 53 percent from 2005 to 2014 as the new pharmacy schools build capacity. Residents of the Metroplex are under- represented in pharmacy education.

27 06/2006 Key Preliminary Findings (cont). Texas is a net importer of pharmacists. In 2005, the net increase in total licensees did not meet the State’s annual projection of pharmacist job openings. Texas schools could increase their class size and remain within the norm for schools in states with similarly large population. The Metroplex has the third largest number of pharmacists per 100,000 population in the state. 49% of new out-of-state graduates and 23% of new Texas graduates practice in the Metroplex.
