John 20:30-31 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. What kind of life?

“Two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” – Mark Twain Why are you here?

John 1:1-4 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

Greek Understanding of Logos According to Philo, — the Logos is divine Reason in whom are comprised all the ideas of finite things, and who created the sensible world by causing these ideas to penetrate into matter. There is a catch… You cant KNOW the divine Reason…

Two Greek Schools of Thought Epicurean – Cant know reason for life, so live for pleasure. “Carpe Diem. Seize the day” Stoic – Cant know reason for life, but live as if there is a reason.” “Virtue is sufficient for happiness.”

Irony – The reason man cannot know the divine Logos is precisely because man has defined his own way. Genesis 3:1-7 Proverbs 16:8 Romans 1:18-23 So, is religion the answer?

Jewish Understanding of Logos Embodying the divine will - Isaiah 40:8 The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. Personified wisdom - Proverbs 8:1–4 1 Does not wisdom call? Does not understanding raise her voice? 2 On the heights beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; 3 beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud: 4 “To you, O men, I call, and my cry is to the children of man.

Gospel (Good News) of John 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

John 1:12-14 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 20:30-31 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

John 17:3 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. Goal of this Series (John’s Gospel) “Chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy him forever” – Westminster Confession “Chief end of man is to glorify God by enjoying him forever.” – John Piper
