14. X. Abraham's 3 Visitors at the Oaks of Mamre, a Divine Visitation—Gen. 18:1-15 A son is promised within the coming year, even though Abraham is old. In the other side of the tent, and because of their age (100/90) Sarah laughed scornfully and disbelievingly, which the Visitors confronted. So the son’s name was “Isaac,” which means laughter—but when Isaac is born, it is a laughter of joy.

Abraham's plea for Sodom... cont.) 16 When the men got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way. 17 Then the L ORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? 18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him. 19 For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the L ORD by doing what is right and just, so that the L ORD will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.” (Gen. 18:16ff)

If not, I will know.” 22 The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the L ORD. (Gen. 18:20-22)

Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing —to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?” 26 The L ORD said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.” (Gen. 18:23-26)

Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?” “If I find forty-five there,” he said, “I will not destroy it.” --What if only forty... ? --What if only thirty... ?” --What if only twenty... ? --What if only ten... ? (and that was the end of the conversation... ) (Gen. 18:27-32)

20. XI. Abraham's plea for Sodom and Gomorrah; Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed —Gen. 18:16–Gen 19:29 Abraham asked for God’s grace for the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah... even this far back in history... Did you know that God wanted His grace to be known even back then?

22. XII. Abraham and Abimelech—Gen. 20 Now Abraham moved on from there into the region of the Negev and lived between Kadesh and Shur.

Abraham and Abimelech—Gen. 20, cont.) 2 and there Abraham said of his wife Sarah, “She is my sister. ” Then Abimelech king of Gerar sent for Sarah and took her. 3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream one night and said to him, “You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken; she is a married woman.” 4 Now Abimelech had not gone near her, so he said, “Lord, will you destroy an innocent nation? 5 Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister, ’ and didn’t she also say, ‘He is my brother’? I have done this with a clear conscience and clean hands.

24. (XII. Abraham and Abimelech—Gen. 20, cont.) 6 Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against me. That is why I did not let you touch her. 7 Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all who belong to you will die.”

25. XIII. Birth of Isaac, and Ishmael is cast out— Gen. 21:1-21 Isaac is born, and Sarah loudly proclaimed him as a miracle, because she was 90 years old--apparently to put Hagar into her place. Hagar’s son, Ishmael began to mock Isaac, and so the jealousy between them became revenge, and Abraham gave Hagar food and water and sent them away. But God blessed them, too.

26. XIV. The Treaty at Beersheba— Gen. 21:22-34 22 At that time Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his forces said to Abraham, “God is with you in everything you do. 23 Now swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants. Show to me and the country where you now reside as a foreigner the same kindness I have shown to you.” 24 Abraham said, “I swear it.”

The Treaty at Beersheba— Gen. 21:22-34, cont.) 25 Then Abraham complained to Abimelech about a well of water that Abimelech’s servants had seized.... 30 He replied, “Accept these seven lambs from my hand as a witness that I dug this well. ” 31 So that place was called Beersheba, because the two men swore an oath there.

28. XV. Abraham Tested with Isaac— Gen. 22 22 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. 2 Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”

29. (XV. Abraham Tested with Isaac—Gen. 22) 9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the L ORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied.

30. (XV. Abraham Tested with Isaac—Gen. 22) 12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son. ” 13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place The L ORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the L ORD it will be provided.”

31. XVI. Later years—Gen. 23—25 Abraham lived a hundred and seventy-five years. 8 Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, an old man and full of years; and he was gathered to his people. 9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite, 10 the field Abraham had bought from the Hittites. There Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah. (NIV)
