3 Unit Description Content Area: Physical Activity Skills: Analyzing Internal and External Influences, Self Management Grade: Middle School Number of Lessons: 4

4 Unit Rationale Nearly half of American youths aged 12-21 years are not vigorously active on a regular basis. About 14 percent of young people report no recent physical activity. Inactivity is more common among females (14%) than males (7%) and among black females (21%) than white females (12%). Participation in all types of physical activity declines strikingly as age or grade in school increases (CDC, 2001). Physical activity benefits include: Helps build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints. Helps control weight, build lean muscle, and reduce fat. Prevents or delays the development of high blood pressure and helps reduce blood pressure in some adolescents with hypertension. Reference: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 5 Unit Plan Goals The students will comprehend concepts related to physical activity. The students will demonstrate the ability to analyze internal and external influences, and self manage their physical activity.

6 Unit Plan Objectives Lesson 1: Benefits of Physical Activity Content:  A student will identify the health benefits of physical activity. Skills:  A student will analyze influences on personal activity levels

7 Unit Plan Objectives Lesson 2: Types of Activity Content:  A student will identify the components of fitness  A student will explain the frequency, intensity and amount of time needed for healthful physical activity Skill:  A student will self-manage using a log to document heart rates and activities participated in.

8 Unit Plan Objectives Lesson 3: Playing it Safe Content:  A student will describe how to use proper equipment and precautions to protect themselves during physical activity  A student will explain the importance of protective equipment when playing sports Skill:  A student will self-evaluate the protection used during physical activity

12 Unit Special Considerations When teaching students about physical activity it is important to remember that not all of the students are physically active and may not be accepting to physical activity. Students may not be physically fit and may be struggling with their physical appearance so the students should be encouraged to respect the thoughts and feelings of others related to physical activity.

13 Unit Ground Rules All students are unique with their physical fitness. Be sure to respect the abilities of all the students.
