2 City of Milwaukee, Environmental Engineering What Area is Included in this Project?

3 City of Milwaukee, Environmental Engineering The purpose of this project is to reduce rain water from entering into the sanitary sewers, ultimately reducing the chances of basement flooding from sanitary sewer backups. City of Milwaukee I/I Demonstration Project

4 City of Milwaukee, Environmental Engineering This project will focus on rehabilitating sanitary building sewers, also known as laterals, which is the pipe connecting the plumbing in your house to the City of Milwaukee sanitary sewer. 5 City of Milwaukee, Environmental Engineering5 How Do Basement Backups Happen? During heavy rain storms, rain water enters into sanitary sewers through various defects. The amount of water in the sewer system can rise above your basement floor level, causing sewer backups. During heavy rain storms, rain water enters into sanitary sewers through various defects. 6 6 City of Milwaukee, Environmental Engineering In July 2010, the City of Milwaukee received over 10,000 complaints of flooding and basement backups. In July 2010, the City of Milwaukee received over 10,000 complaints of flooding and basement backups. Certain areas of the City of Milwaukee, including this area, were selected as a priority for sewer rehabilitation based on high concentrations of reported backups and flooding. In this area, over 62% (280 of 449) of residents reported basement backups in July 2010. In this area, over 62% (280 of 449) of residents reported basement backups in July 2010. In this area since 2010, The City of Milwaukee has completed $1.04 Million in public sanitary sewer main rehabilitation and replacement, with an additional $400,000 in sewer replacement proposed for 2013. 8 8 City of Milwaukee, Environmental Engineering What will be done? A camera will be inserted in the lateral from the sewer main in the street. The condition of the lateral is then assessed for rehabilitation and/or repair.

9 City of Milwaukee, Environmental Engineering What will be done? A small 2 foot diameter excavation will be made in the yard as close to the house as possible.

10 City of Milwaukee, Environmental Engineering What will be done? A cleanout will be installed on the existing sewer lateral.

11 City of Milwaukee, Environmental Engineering What will be done? The hole will then be filled and the cleanout capped.

12 City of Milwaukee, Environmental Engineering What will be done? The lateral will be cleaned and prepared for rehabilitation.

13 City of Milwaukee, Environmental Engineering What will be done? The liner will then be prepared for installation.

14 City of Milwaukee, Environmental Engineering What will be done? The liner will be installed in the lateral and cured in place.

15 City of Milwaukee, Environmental Engineering After Rehabilitation Upon completion of the project, the yard will be restored.

16 City of Milwaukee, Environmental Engineering After Rehabilitation No concrete or shrubs will be disturbed during the project.

17 City of Milwaukee, Environmental Engineering Before and After Rehabilitation Before – Lateral is cracked and deteriorated. Water from the ground can enter the lateral freely. After – Lateral is smooth and sealed. Water from the ground can no longer enter the lateral.

18 City of Milwaukee, Environmental Engineering Why was this method chosen? Renews the sewer lateral with minimal disturbance to the property. Eliminates root infiltration problems and other minor defects.

19 City of Milwaukee, Environmental Engineering Why was this method chosen? Creates a one-piece pipe with no joints, eliminating groundwater infiltration.
